That is the definition of transmission in a nutshell. Ben Ratliff, author of "Every Song Ever" might add that, "It's all in the tone... the most human part of music, the carrier of emotion." The artist's vocal or instrumental manipulation and delivery has an effect on us. We hear and identify a musical element and we just know that an emotion is being conveyed. This I agree with and can say is most evident in his example, "Haq Ali Ali Moula Ali". Nusrat's low volume and slow tempo has the power to make the audience feel like they're in a trance. Although the song is in Arabic, a language I am not familiar with, I can feel the passion conveyed through his vocals. Another comparable example oftransmission is "Folon" by Salif Keita. The song is also in a language unfamiliar to me, yet the tone conveys feelings of sorrow and loneliness because it resembles crying. Even the the sudden fluctuations in volume resemble heavy sobbing and yearning for something.
