There would be three more winters more terrible than any that had ever gone before, with snow and ice and biting winds and no power in the sun, and no summers to divide this cruel season and make it bearable, but only one long winter-time with never a respite.

2. Destruction of Mountains

The mountains would shake and tremble, and the rocks would be torn from the earth.

3. Flooding and Washing Over Seas

The sea would wash over the fields and the forests as Jormungand, the Midgard-Serpent, raised himself out of the water to advance on the land.

4. Others Get Released

At that moment all chains would be sundered and all prisoners released; Fenris-Wolf would break free from Gleipnir, and Loki rise up from his prison under the ground. Out of fiery Muspellheim, would come Surt the giant with his flaming sword; and out of her house would come Hel, with Garm and hound at her side, to join with her father, Loki.

5. Heimdall Notices Their Arrival

From Bifrost, Heimdall, with his sharp eyes, would see them come, and know that the gods had feared was at hand, and he would blow his horn to summon them to defend the universe.

6. War Begins

And in the mighty conflict would follow, all the earth, all Asgard, even Niflheim itself, would shake with the clang and cry of war. Odin would fight against huge Fenris-Wolf, and hard would be the struggle they would have. Thor, with Miollnir, would kill the Midgard-Serpent, as had ever been his wish to do; but he would fall dead from the dying monster's poisonous breath.

7. Surt Bears Down on Frey

Surt with his flaming sword would bear down on Frey, but frey had given his own sword to Skirnir, and as Loki had foretold, bitterly would he regret it, for he would have no more than the antler of a deer with which to defend himself.

8. Fenris-Wolf Devours and Perishes

Though Odin would fight long and bravely with Fenris-Wolf, in the end that mighty monster would be too strong for him, and the wolf with his gaping jaws would devour the gods, and the perish at the hands of Vidar the Silent.

9. World Back to Normal Again

But the Norsemen believed that one day, out of the sea that had engulfed it, and out of the ruins, the world would grow again, fresh and green and beautiful, with fair people dwelling on it, born from Lifthrasir and Lif, the only man and woman to escape the fire. And everywhere else would be happiness.
