This is an article about polar bears going extinct because of the severe climate change. I picked this article because I love animals, I volunteered at the Salem County animal shelter 2 summers in a row, and I used to want to be a zoo veterinarian. So when I came across this article, I was instantly interested, but quickly upset when I read that innocent animals are dying off because of human actions. One statistic I read was that by 2050, two thirds of polar bears will be gone... that shocks me. Two thirds of a species gone because of human mistakes - global warming is a huge problem for both people, along with plants, animals, and the rest environment. We need to pollute the environment less and work on stopping global warming, along with cooling the planet down now. Humans have to realize they aren't the only organisms on our planet, and we need to start helping animals, like the polar bears, instead of hurting them.

This article is about water pollution; scientists are finding more and more pollutants in our freshwater bodies. Sadly, freshwater is becoming a site for biological waste (including human sewage, animal excrement, and runoff contaminated by nutrient-rich fertilizers) These pollutants end up in river systems and then into seas, harming aquatic life, which greatly upsets me. I have always been interested in marine life (shocker, after I decided I didn't want to be a veterinarian anymore, I considered marine biology for a little while). There are so many organisms in the ocean, and quite a few that humans have not even discovered yet. Yet, humans continue to pollute their homes without caring, then most of the times refuse to do anything about it. Not only is the water pollution harming animals and marine organisms, but it can and will also harm humans in the future. Water is a necessity for humans, plants, animals ... aka mostly everything on our planet. Even though almost 70 percent of the world is covered by water, only 2.5 percent of it is freshwater. The rest is saltwater from the oceans. And of that 2.5 percent, only 1 percent of the freshwater is easily accessible, the rest of it is trapped in glaciers and snowfields. So if we keep polluting the small amount of freshwater we have left, we will just be creating more problems for ourselves in the future. We need to work on fixing the problems instead of making more.

This article is about biodiversity, and how it is beneficial to our planet. Biodiversity helps our ecosystems by boosting productivity. Each species, no matter how large or small, plays an important role in their ecosystem. For example, a large number of plants in an ecosystem creates a greater variety of crops and animals; more biodiversity means more sustainability, which is very good for ecosystems, because then they will be able to better withstand and recover from diseases/plagues, natural disasters, and other problems. Biodiversity allows us to live healthy and happy lives. It provides us with an array of foods and materials and it contributes to the economy. It also helps further medical cures and discoveries, alone with genetic diversity, which can prevent diseases. Sadly, human activity has started causing extinctions of some organisms; Even though there are some conservation efforts, it hasn't been enough to stop biodiversity losses. We are the reason biodiversity has decreased, so it is our duty to help fix this problem, for both the animals and plants we share our environment with, as long as for ourselves and for our own health, economy, and future.
