Gulerod har været almindeligt dyrket i Danmark i over 100 år. Den dyrkede gulerod stammer oprindeligt fra Nordindien.
Hvide med lilla menes at være den mest oprindelige gulerodsfarve. Siden fremkommer gule gulerødder, helt hvide gulerødder og først noget senere orange og orangerøde
