He was raised in a poor waterfront neighborhood where his parents owned a tavern. At age seven, he proved to be too much for his parents to handle and was sent St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, a Catholic school where he stayed for the next 12 years of his life. There he met a monk named Brother Mathias who became a huge role model to Babe. Mathias and several other monks introduced baseball to the young Ruth in which he excelled. When he was 15, he showed extreme skill in hitting and pitching which caught the attention of Jack Dunn, the owner of the minor league Baltimore Orioles. Then, the Orioles critique players for the Boston Red Sox. At the age of 19, the law stated that Babe had to have a legal guardian to sign his baseball contract for him to play professionally. Dunn became Ruth´s legal guardian. Teammates jokingly called him "Dunn's new babe¨ which stuck, and he quickly coined the nickname "Babe" Ruth.
