The cultural meaning of masks has shifted since COVID has started. They went from just being used in professions such as dentists and surgeons to being highly symbolic and politicized in the United States. This cultural shift has contested values such as, masculinity, femininity, freedom, individualism, liberty, strength, weakness, and responsibility.

In the United States, we view birth as more of a medical procedure rather than a natural humanistic/holistic process of bringing life into the world. We have an overall culture against home birth but this is slowly changing as midwifery becomes more socially accepted than it has been in the past. In the United States, 32% of births are cesarean section. In Japan, only 19% of births are cesarean section, which is one of the lowest in the world. This is largely due to Japanese birth practices being more humanistic as they view birth as a process not to be tampered with. Also in Japan, hospital births are just as common as other birth practices and are entirely dependent on the individual's personal preference. However, in both cultures, the values around childbirth are changing and progressing.

Our topic covered the symbolism behind wearing face masks in different cultures. Face coverings became a highly politicized item in areas of the world such as the U.S., Britain, and Mexico. People often think that they can do whatever they feel like and wearing or not wearing a mask often associates with one side of the political spectrum. It is challenging as a democracy, because we have to worry about how everybody will react versus other countries. On the other hand, in other places in the world, such as Hong Kong, they had adopted the utilization of mask-wearing long before they were even mandated because they have a long history of handling infectious diseases. Therefore, their infection rates reflect their compliance with wearing face masks.

A key thing to know about anthropologists involved in health care is how can they can actually solve problems. They can help identify the cultural obstacles that need to be discussed and overcome. Anthropology helps in the day to day operations of health care. Through the knowledge an anthropologist has about a culture, practical steps to mesh medical practices with cultural ideology is possible. By being with and knowing about a culture, an anthropologist can provide better support and ideas on how to improve health conditions within other societies.

“The physiological process of childbirth may be universal, but the experience of childbirth, including the approach toward pain, varies from culture to culture.” (p. 418). For example, Brazil views childbirth as technocratic and C-sections are very common. These C-sections are utilized often as a sign of class, so if you are of higher class, you would opt for this procedure as a way of avoiding the pain and the complications. On the other hand, Japan utilizes a very humanistic and natural way of childbirth where the birth-giver is free to roam around and the midwives are only there to provide emotional and medical support. These two different ways to go about childbirth show that each culture views the pain of childbirth incredibly different.

Biomedicine is the practice of applying modern sciences (biology and chemistry) to individual disease, and health management. It is a technocratic approach to medicine to not only remedy, but also diagnose issues. The textbook referred to it as an "invasive" approach. Biomedicine is cultural as it reflects the basis of Western culture. Our culture is fast paced and everyone is trying to capitalize on their resources. Health care is not a nation wide right in the US, therefore the wealthy have better access to better medicine. We also are very reliant on biomedicine. For any issue or illness we face, we expect an over the counter pill to make it all better.

Are There Other Global Health Systems? Group 3

The whole premise of this section revolves around a comparison between traditional Chinese medicinal practices and current Western medicinal practices. An important thing to keep in mind is that there is an overlap between these practices, and all practices of medicine around the world interact with each other. The cornerstone of Chinese medicine revolves around the health of one in terms of the relationship between the Heavens and the Earth. Instead of viewing certain body systems as ill, illness is classified in Chinese medicine as when the qi is blocked, disrupting the energy flow of an individual. Instead of going to a doctor, practices like acupuncture, moxibustion, and usage of herbs are viewed as what to do in order to heal. These practices have found a niche in western medicine as an alternative to modern medicine. Another major difference is that there is not an umbrella prescription for illnesses in Chinese medicine. Instead, health professionals negotiate healing practices with their patients.
