People worry about kids playing with guns and watching violent videos, we're scared that some sort of culture of violence is taking them over but nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. 

Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable or was I miserable because i listened to pop music...

I hadn't read this book until I saw the film but did so promptly after I discovered it was a novel. I too began sort of cataloging my favorite things and really giving it some thought about what are my top five bands, books, television series etc. I can tell you now my top five in pretty much everything, but my all time top five desert island albums are.
