I found myself inspired by the variety of modules on my course [...] I realised how many routes I could go down with my writing, each seemingly more exciting than the last.

Over the last few weeks, some of the students have been working as editors, choosing and editing pieces for submission. Others have been working on promotion and marketing, while the Design and Production team are making final decisions on the way the magazine will look and feel to read.

For one of the writing tasks we wrote postcards to our future selves, to be hidden in a book and discovered again one day by chance. Katy Mahood, Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing, said, "It was a great pleasure to meet everyone. I hope everyone remembered to put their postcards in a book!"

Sharon Clark, Senior Lecturer in Scriptwriting, said, "It was wonderful to meet our new students. Drama empowers new voices; it's inspirational work."

"It's so exciting to meet such an enthusiastic group of writers," said Dan Anthony, Programme Leader for Creative and Professional Writing. "We're about to go on a creative journey together - what happens next is going to be unexpected, productive and joyous."

When I came to UWE Bristol in the middle of lockdown, I remember having loads of anxiety over connecting with people. I never really considered myself popular or all that talkative, and all the rules around social distancing didn’t help much either. Now, I’m in my final year. I’m the president of one of the biggest societies on campus, and I feel more confident and self-assured than ever. How did this happen?

A zine is a self-published booklet, made using text, images, or a combination. Historically, they've been made to be reproduced quickly and at low cost, making them a good way for people to circulate ideas and stories outside traditional publishing routes.

In the module, students learn how to explore their writing ideas through collage, drawing and bookbinding, and slowly build up a creative practice that encompasses art-making. They also learn about zine culture, and the theory of creative practice.

This term, they're making zines in response to an interview with another person.

To see the students' finished zines, come along to our show at the School of Arts Degree Show, in the Publishing Lab at Bower Ashton campus (8th - 12th June 2024).

In the spring term, the Writing Club sets real writing tasks for second-year students, giving them the chance to present their work and get feedback, just as in a real agency. In the summer, they offer a paid summer internship for a UWE student to gain valuable agency experience and contribute to high profile projects. Read more about the New Writers programme.

Our 2024 UWE Bristol degree show combined exhibitions at Bower Ashton, Arnolfini, Spike Island and Frenchay Campus, accompanied by an extensive digital Showcase. We celebrated the exceptional work of more than 1,200 graduates from more than 40 courses - including Creative and Professional Writing.

The 2025 Degree Show will be held in June, with the exact dates TBC. It allows our Creative and Professional Writing students to publicise their writing to various creative and professional audiences, leading to networking and publishing opportunities.

The Whale is an immersive reimagining of Moby Dick designed for live audiences, brought to life by Jack Hardiker-Bresson (Office of Everyone) and Sharon Clark (Raucous).

This innovative project cultivates dynamic relationships between digital projection, physical environments, and spatial creative captioning, offering new ways for deaf and hearing-impaired audiences to engage with immersive narratives.

Issue Two of Nova is a beautiful print version, edited, designed, produced and publicised by our students. The issue was showcased as part of our annual Degree Show, and we will be hosting an official launch for the magazine later this summer.

All students on the Creative and Professional Writing degree have the opportunity to work on Nova and submit their writing to it. Submissions will be open again later this year... Keep an eye out!

We held our 2025 UWE Bristol degree show across exhibitions at Bower Ashton, Arnolfini, Spike Island and Frenchay Campus, accompanied by an extensive digital Showcase. Graduations take place at the beautiful Bristol Beacon at the heart of the city, and allow family and loved ones to commemorate a truly great achievement.
