In the rare instances where she has talked it has either been when she has been addressed by someone of a higher status or those who are also Handmaids. When speaking to authorities she won't speak unless spoken to and is very careful about her wording around others. Examples of this were found here, “We learned to lip-read, our heads flat on the beds, turned sideways, watching each other’s mouths. In this way we exchanged names, from bed to bed: Alma. Janine. Dolores. Moira. June.” (pg 2) and ““It’s a beautiful May day,” Ofglen says. I feel rather than see her head turn towards me, waiting for a reply. “Yes,” I say. “Praise be,”” (pg 35)

Simple things like how she used to own a garden, what summer used to entail, and old buildings that now serve a different purpose. These flashes to the past often show her reminiscing her old freedom and what life was like before she became a Handmaid. For example, “I once had a garden. I can remember the smell of the turned earth, the plump shapes of bulbs held in the hands, fullness, the dry rustle of seeds through the fingers.” (pg 8), “The good weather holds. It’s almost like June, when we would get out our
sundresses and our sandals and go for an ice cream cone.” (pg 35), and “We slept in what had once been the gymnasium. The floor was of
varnished wood, with stripes and circles painted on it, for the games that were
formerly played there; the hoops for the basketball nets were still in place,
though the nets were gone.” (pg 1).

When Offred is remembering the past symbols are used to accurately show how she's feeling and what she's going through. Symbols are also used when showing the power dynamics between Offred's and those of higher status. For example, “There was old sex in the room and loneliness, and expectation, of
something without a shape or name. I remember that yearning, for something that was always about to happen and was never the same as the hands that were on us there and then, in the small of the back, or out back, in the parking lot, or in the television room with the sound turned down and only the pictures flickering over lifting flesh.” (pg 1) and “She didn’t step aside to let me in, she just stood there in the doorway, blocking the entrance. She wanted me to feel that I could not come into the house unless she said so. There is push and shove, these days, over such toeholds.” (pg 9).
