This character proves throughout the story that he is extremely self-reliant. He starts off as a humble farm boy, but through hard work and thoughtful decisions makes his way to becoming a force to be reckoned with. He understood well “that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till”. He worked hard to be noticed by the one he loved, and worked harder to learn how to protect her. If he were to simply copy what the antagonists were doing, he would quickly learn “that imitation is suicide”. He had to outsmart, outwork, and outweigh others in order to get to his goal, and that takes an immense amount of self-reliance.

Lyrics from this song that parallel the essay include the first verse “Rising up, back on the street/Did my time, took my chances/Went the distance, now I'm back on my feet/Just a man and his will to survive” which parallels the idea that “The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried”. Self reliance isn’t always about being able to avoid difficult situations; It is more often about being able to pick yourself back up from them. The song talks about rising up from a challenge ready to face anything else the world can throw at you, and the essay similarly talks about discovering this new power of self-reliance through testing yourself and facing difficulty. Another verse from the song that parallels the writing is “Face to face, out in the heat/Hanging tough, staying hungry/They stack the odds 'til we take to the street/For the kill with the skill to survive”. This verse describes “hanging tough” and “staying hungry” in a way that exemplifies what they essay says when “A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace.” Just like how the tiger is hungry when it fails a hunt, a person has no peace when they don’t put their best effort into something.

Locke is today considered a great philosopher and the “Father of Liberalism” among other things. He helped influence the enlightenment, American revolution, and many other world-changing events. Many in his time probably saw his ideas as very extreme or even crazy, but today his writings serve as the foundation for many of our country’s foundational systems. He was probably called a revolutionary or traitor for wanting to see a change in how government worked, but people greatly misunderstood his motives. What today seems so obvious and simple was then misunderstood as inciting chaos and protest.
