Askoldova Mogyla is one of the most famous historical sites and tracts in Kyiv, which once also housed a prestigious necropolis that was destroyed during the Soviet era. Nowadays, it is a park, a monument of garden and park art. It is located between Dniprovsky Uzvoz, Ivan Mazepa Street and Mariinsky Park. Askoldova Mohyla arose on the site of the Uhorsky tract. This area has long been associated with the legend of the killing of Askold (and sometimes Dir). According to the annals, Askold was buried in this very place. According to legend, Princess Olga built here in the 10th century. the wooden church of St. Mykola (Mykola is the name Askold took at baptism in 867). In 971, the church was destroyed by Olga's son Svyatoslav, whose rule was associated with a violent pagan reaction, persecution of Christians and destruction of churches. Prince Volodymyr restored the previously destroyed temple only in 990. In 1036, a nunnery was founded at the church. The old wooden church on Askold's grave existed until 1809. Askold's tomb was installed in the basement of the temple. A cemetery was located around the church, where representatives of famous families, cultural figures, and prominent Kyiv burghers were buried.

This event marked the founding of Zaporizhzhya Sich, a Cossack fortress and a base for sea and land campaigns.
The historical and cultural complex "Zaporizhka Sich" seems to have been preserved from the time of the Cossacks to this day, albeit on a somewhat reduced scale: the inner Kish adjoins the suburb, and the active Church of the Protection of the Mother of God rises on the Maidan. Towers and fortifications stretch to the sky. Accurately reproduced Cossack huts and the Sich school can be seen.
