Children's Yoga

Children's yoga is becoming more popular now a days to promote self regulation in children. At the preschool I work at we incorporate yoga times once a week and daily whenever the children need to balance out their energy and emotions. According to PositivePsychology there are many beneficial outcomes to yoga in the classroom such as self regulation as I mentioned, self confidence, Respect for peers and self, and Reduce stress. Yoga is a great way for young children to channel their energy and turn it into something positive.

Virtual Learning

When COVID-19 hit the US the world saw a shift in education. School closures were happening everywhere and virtual learning spiked up, which had many negative downfalls and unfortunately some districts still choose virtual learning instead of calamity or snow days. Many students have troubles learning from a screen. They need peer interaction and teacher interaction to learn best from a lesson and reading or listening to someone explain it does not work as well. To add to the case, many students do not have the resources to carry out virtual learning and the districts struggle to accompany internet for the school wide district so many students are falling behind in these days. I do not agree the virtual learning is age appropriate for early childhood and I think it would be best if schools stuck with traditional learning.

Play Based Learning

Play based learning mostly happens in preschool to grade two although most elementary schools use play as a way of learning. Some examples of play based learning would be painting, obstacle courses, imaginative play, or sensory play. Through play based learning children learn boundaries, self regulation, they can question their environment and how it works with and around them. It is an age based practice because children naturally love to play. According to Brightwheel, As children play, they engage their imagination, take risks, and learn problem-solving to support their development.

Recess

Giving children recess at school is a great way to give back concentration, focus, and engage in psychical play. Children in school can have a hard time staying on task and sitting in a desk all day. Recess can give them the opportunity to engage with peers on their own level and gives them a sense of free choice which in turn can promote self confidence. It is also beneficial on the social skills as well. Socializing with peers is an important learning skill and recess is the best age appropriate way for children to socialize on their own terms.
