Q: Will we have the Words Their Way workbooks again next year?

A: The workbooks are consumable & will be restocked every year. We are looking to determine which levels to purchase for each grade level to ensure you have what you need.

WTW Resources Use

Q: So from the meeting today, Words Their Way is not a must. We can chose to use Words Their Way or the HMH Foundational resources?

A: WTW is a resource, and for a while was the only resources, we had in PISD to provide spelling/decoding instruction to our students. We now have multiple resources that can be utilized to provide on grade level instruction and intervention or extension for differentiation. Your professional judgement and knowledge of your students should drive all instructional decisions. Students deserve explicit, systematic spelling/decoding instruction, on grade level and at their level, we just now have multiple resources to pull instruction from.

High Frequency Words/Sight Words

Q: What is the sequence for teaching sight words? My team is currently using the words in the HMH TE. Also what words should we be teaching?

A: The sequence of the HFWs is evident in the High-Frequency Word list we have linked on the planner this year. We listed the words (as noted at the top of the list) by reading level, based on the HFWs students will need to be able to read within each text in the Next Steps reading record assessment books. We designed the HFW list this way, because it's the perfect complement to UBD, or backwards design, where you are teaching with the assessment in mind. This is your sequence for teaching the words. Once students reach a reading level of I, they will need more decoding support to grow their reading, not HFWs.

Previously the district simply provided a words list of the first 300 words (25 for K, 100 for 1st, and 300 for 2nd), but they were not in any particular sequence.

If you are following HMH's S&S for teaching the HFWs (sight words) then you may not teach students the words they need to be able to read the texts to grow their reading levels on the reading records.

HMH S&S for foundational skills

Q: Where is the HMH scope and sequence on the curriculum planner again?

A: It is not linked on the planner as of yet, however we are developing a Foundational Skills Scope & sequence (Coming Soon!) that will show your grade level TEKS and all the resources we have that you can use to teach those TEKS. If you want to find the HMH S&S for the Foundational Skills you can use the tiny url links from your TL meeting, or you can search in HMH Ed online for "foundational skills scope & sequence" and you will find it.

WTW & HMH resources

Q: Just got the clarification on WTW and the HMH foundational resources. If we favor HMH resources will the primary spelling test still be the best

A: You should see specific growth in your grade level TEKS if you are providing targeted, systematic, and explicit instruction of the TEKS, no matter the resource. So the quick answer is YES, if you are intentional about what instruction you are providing whole group & differentiating for each student.
