However, Ratliff argues that music can mimic the motion of feelings and that we have to have some sort of context to clue us into what the song is about. Ratliff describes what is called a state of transmission, which is an extreme form of emotion in music that transcends specific moods. Students or seekers can feel the power of transmission by seeking to let go of their own existence and perceive the essence of their god. Ratliff doesn’t think there is a glorious religious ecstasy in music and I disagree. How is one supposed to make music without the emotion behind it? Some of the greatest hits were created because the artist went through some sort of emotional turmoil to write it. Ratliff uses The Beatles’ Julia as an example of transmission. He focuses on John Lennon’s voice and how Lennon puts great attention into his tone and how it’s clear and sensitive toward the song. Following Ratliff’s example, I used Aerosmith’s Dream On and focused on the powerful dynamic combination of the drums, guitars, and lyrics.
