a Which tool(s) you found most useful/engaging and believe you’ll use again in the future with your classes?

There are a few. I will certainly be using TedEd and EdPuzzle more often now that I’ve got a little more experience in making these. I am still quite interested in finding out whether there is an optimum amount of questions that should be used for these activities? I think the first time I tried the EdPuzzle I went a little over the top and created too many questions.

VideoAnt is something I am also keen to explore. I created one video using this and the questions I asked were quite open and encouraging reflection (in comparison to Edpuzzle for example). I think to use this in class would be quite difficult and perhaps not always realistic (in terms of time), but I think if students got more used to the platform, and with some learner training, it might be a fruitful tool to use for homework/flipped learning. I think one of the downsides to VideoAnt is that it seems difficult and impractical to share material between teachers (unless I am missing something).

I have created my own GoogleSheet where I can begin to store links (connected to each lesson of the syllabus I teach) so I will strive to keep developing this. Our department also has a shared document so these lessons can be shared between teachers.

b What have you learnt about using technology in the classroom and how will this change your classroom practice?

I found the SAMR model to be a really useful starting point. I think previously, prior to this course, I was already sceptical of using tech for the sake of it. I don’t think technology should ever be used as a replacement to a well-thought out lesson and ultimately I see areas such as classroom management, teacher-student rapport, creation of a learner-focused environment and a solid (or creative!) plan as staple to a good lesson. It is however often tempting to over-rely on tech! So it was great to learn about this model, to have it as a point of reference, to consider it and reflect when creating activities or materials using tech. I think in the future revisiting this model will continue to be worthwhile. Although there is nothing wrong with substituting ‘paper’ activities for those using technology, it is nice to be able to aim towards creating activities that really offer something different.

I don’t think, fundamentally, that my approach or philosophy towards using tech will change after having completed this course. However, what has changed, I think, is my motivation to and confidence in trying out new things in the classroom. Specifically, I am interested in trying out tools such as Quizlet Live – which perhaps previously I might have shied away from trying.

From a personal point of view, I am sometimes reluctant to create materials that involve using my own voice (audio or video). (Hence the written reflection here). So, I think one thing to aim towards is taking myself out of my comfort zone and possibly trying to do more of this.

I have been using GoogleDocs for a while before doing this course and I think this is a really great platform to use for collaborative learning. I would like to continue using this and to explore more creative ways that this could be utilized(in class especially).

I think it would be great to explore use of mobiles in class. As I mentioned in one post, I have some classes where I am happy to let students use their mobile phones, but in one class use of mobiles seems to be more of a distraction. So further research in this, considering how students’ attitudes or understanding of the potential of mobiles as a learning tool could be developed & using phones more creatively to support learning is something I’d like to explore.

I think it would also be really interesting to get student feedback on all of the above. It is one thing for me to reflect on how I think this technology influences the class, but it would be useful to know how my students view tech and its role in their learning.
