Why this time period was Significant

The roaring 20’s was a significant time period because there was a mass political and social change, new trends were made, and better inventions were created. After the 19th Amendment was made, women were finally allowed to vote. There was also a new trend called “Flappers”, a flapper was a young woman in the 1920’s who has short bobbed hair, loves to dance, drinks and smokes, and wears short skirts. I know this because in the Roaring 20´s article, it says, ¨The most familiar symbol of the “Roaring Twenties” is probably the flapper: a young woman with bobbed hair and short skirts who drank, smoked and said what might be termed “unladylike” things, in addition to being more sexually “free” than previous generations.¨ This shows how much more free and empowered women were because they are doing things considered unladylike and just having a good time.Women also were able to have jobs and not just sit around the house all day. In addition to more rights for women, the 1920’s also introduced a consumer (sometimes referred to as urban) society because more people lived in cities, rather than farms. There were many new inventions such as the Ford Model T which allowed people to be able to buy a car at a low price and helped people get around the busy cities. Inventions such as the vacuum cleaner and the washing machine helped people do hose work faster. There was also a new music style introduced, which was jazz, that introduced a free way of dancing. There was also prohibition, which banned all manufacturing alcohol.

Vocabulary Words

Some important vocabulary words that I came upon while researching are Flapper, prohibition, the 19th Amendment, and consumer society. A Flapper is a way of dressing that young 1920s women adopted. They often preformed acts that were typically unladylike. They were freedom a sign of women's freedom. Next is prohibition. The prohibition was apart of the 18th amendment which banned all manufacturing and selling of alcoholic beverages. Many people found a loophole in this, they could drink the alcohol just not sell it. So before the ban, many people stock piled alcohol. The 19th Amendment was an amendment to the constitution that allowed women to vote. I know this because in the Roaring 20s article, it says, ¨They could vote at last: The 19th Amendment to the Constitution had guaranteed that right in 1920.¨ Lastly, a consumer society was what the 1920s was referred to as. To go more into detail, a consumer society is when there is lots of economic growth and people are able to grow financially and spend freely.

What Human Right Is Expressed?

One Human right that is being expressed is Human Right #19, which is the freedom of expression. I think that the freedom of expression fits with 1920s culture because Flappers musicians were very free with how they represented themselves and how they acted. Flappers expressed themselves in the way that they didn't care about gender roles. They dressed in short, revealing clothing and did more things that were considered masculine, like drinking and smoking. They represent freedom because they just liked having fun and expressing themselves, and not caring what others think. I know this because in The Roaring 20s article it said, ¨he most familiar symbol of the “Roaring Twenties” is probably the flapper: a young woman with bobbed hair and short skirts who drank, smoked and said what might be termed “unladylike” things, in addition to being more sexually “free” than previous generations.¨ This shows how flappers expressed themselves.

The most popular music at the time was Jazz. This affected people because it allowed them to feel free on the dance floor because all young people at the time just wanted to dance. I know this because in The Roaring 20s article, it says, ¨...but many in the younger generation loved the freedom they felt on the dance floor.¨ This shows how people loved how it felt when they could dance to jazz music and express themselves.

What was the Culture like and how did it Affect Women?

"The culture in the 1920s was very new, or urban. There were many new things being introduced into society, but one way that majorly affected women was the mass political change. Women were finally allowed to vote and were able to freely express themselves. Women in the 1920s also adopted a new way of dressing that was considered unladylike at the time, they wore short skirts with bobbed hair. They also drank and smoked, which were normally just male dominated things. I know this because in the Roaring 20s article it stated, "They could vote at last: The 19th Amendment to the Constitution had guaranteed that right in 1920." and " flapper: a young woman with bobbed hair and short skirts who drank, smoked and said what might be termed “unladylike” things, in addition to being more sexually “free” than previous generations." Basically, the new culture affected women because it gave them more rights and let them be free in how they dressed and what they did.
