Dystopia to me means a place where a person is stripped of their own personal rights in order for a governing body to control its citizens. During the round table discussion I realized that most people are not comfortable with the government suppressing our individual freedoms in order to ensure our safety. Modern society is already pseudo-dystopian though because in America government agencies such as the NSA keep a very extensive record on what we do, they observe us when we don't know they are, and violate our privacy in order to "protect the national security". In the novel 1984, the governing body, known as "Big Brother" similarly watches over its citizens like the NSA but instead it's reason for doing so is to control people's ideas and thoughts so they do not become a threat to the government by recognizing themselves as a real person.
