In HS, I'm really pushing them to try alternative punctuation/ways to create complex sentences, so I would probably have them find a passage that could use a semi-colon, hyphen, etc. to create a more complex sentence.

I pull the sample essays of various scores and have students read with a group and revise/edit the essays so that they address the prompt and answer it completely. I hate the AIR test, but they do have some good resources!

Very Much Bad Words

One revision skill I'd love to add is choosing stronger words that say more. My cooperating teacher in student teaching had a running list of what she called, 'very much bad words' and her AP students weren't allowed to use those words (like good, bad, okay, great). Instead, they had to use more descriptive words like fantastic, dreary, mediocre, marvelous. Students could circle 'blah' words (I do this in my own writing a lot when I don't want to stop the flow of ideas), then students can use a thesaurus to replace their circled words.

If every sentence has roughly the same # of words, we talk about how that makes their writing sound.
