Teacher Collaboration: Insightful information offered to educators to enhance lesson on the phases of the moon

Over the next 3-4 days is a good time to ask students to go out after dark and just look for the moon. You could have them draw where it is but just to get them thinking. Full moon is Feb 14.

Next week, maybe starting Feb 20th have them go out again and look for the moon. It won't be visible at night so they won't find it.

Then around Feb 27th the moon will be visible in the morning so you can take you classes out and just look for and find the moon.

After that you are set up to have them try to explain these observations. I still recommend having students go out one night 2-3 times and observe and draw where the moon is. and then go out the same time in the evening for 2-3 days and observe and draw the moon. But that can come in March.

Also, if you want... try a dry run this month. Do the steps listed above yourself so that you know how and where to look and what to draw, and then I'll remind you when some good opportunities come up in March to do the same thing.

Here is a useful site for getting the time of moonrise, set and meridian passing (or when it is highest and due south...like solar noon but instead lunar noon): http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/astronomy.html?n=179&month=2&year=2014&obj=moon&afl=-11&day=1
