People pass because for many different reasons but as demonstrated in this essay, it was done to benefit someone. Back then passing was much more dangerous, especially as a black man but if you were success, you'd be living the life. Not being judged based on your every moment just because you were black. Now passing isn't as dangerous (physically) but society will be quick to "cancel" or talk about someone if they pass as another identity.

I think people choose to pass because they just want to get by. During her time it was more dangerous compared to now. Back then you could've been seriously injured for trying to pass. Where as today, you'll just get a side eye and a confused look; no life threatening situations.

I think people choose to pass in order to hide their true identity and benefit from it in a way. Some positives are safety and benefits that one can have. For example if someone was to pass as a white person they are more likely to strive. A negative impact could be hiding who you are and disconnecting from your true roots.

I think that some people choose to pass because they believe that it would be easier and sometimes even safer to pass as another race instead of their own. A positive of passing is that it could give you better opportunities in life. A negative is that you're lying about your identity not only to others but also to yourself. This can affect the way other people, like your family member, view you.

The people choose to pass as it is mostly a social construct that passing as another allows one to get opportunities that being what they are could not get them. The positives of passing is that you get advantages because of racism's segregation, the negatives are that you could lose your connections since passing doesn't allow you to truly be one or the other like how Margo Jefferson's parents looked down on his uncle because he didn't accomplish much but retreated back to his family.

People choose to pass for many reasons perhaps to safety or security reasons especially depending on the type of people who are in your community or your surrounded by. Then there are reasons such as in the book as to benefit yourself. A positive of passing now is protection and even back then as well. A negative now and then would be people not knowing who you really are and you losing sight of yourself. A major negative back then would be the dangers of your lie when people find out the truth.

People in her time choose to pass due to the simple fact its beneficial and safer. It can open up opportunities that weren't accessible before. This could also allow people to fit in a certain area/group without feeling alienated. While passing during her time has its benefits, it also has its negatives. The constant conflicting identities can lead you not be content with yourself. You will never be as happy as you could've been while being yourself. Additionally, passing doesn't guarantee success as many will still question you.

People choose to pass because they could be trying to protect their identity but also others could be trying to be something they are not. A positive in todays society could be hiding your true identity from strangers/ harassers . A negative is people may view you a certain way and you in a way would be lying to them. In her time passing as white when you were black had its pros and cons, a positive thing being that you could get better opportunities if you passed as white, but a con was people like your family would feel betrayed if they don't pass as white.

I think people choose to pass because they are afraid of who they actually are. Some people don't feel comfortable as themselves. People also pass because they see the benefits of it for them, they may see someone who is different from them in what they think is a better situation. In her times passing as white would get you to live what we think of now as a normal life but back then was so superior to a black person. Now passing would get you different things depending on the situation I think most times passing would either keep you safe or get you an opportunity that you wouldn't get being yourself.

People chose to pass because it was helpful for their future. Being black there weren't many big opportunities compared to what white people were offered. Some positives during the 1900's could be making your choice of living for yourself and not having to be restricted from certain career because of your race. Negatives could be that it shows you weren't truly proud of who you are and that could have affects on your mental and it sucks to have to change yourself just for another group of people.
