Back then passing was much more dangerous, especially as a black man but if you were success, you'd be living the life. Not being judged based on your every moment just because you were black. Some people don't feel comfortable as themselves. People also pass because they see the benefits of it for them, they may see someone who is different from them in what they think is a better situation. In her times passing as white would get you to live what we think of now as a normal life but back then was so superior to a black person. Being black there weren't many big opportunities compared to what white people were offered. Some positives during the 1900's could be making your choice of living for yourself and not having to be restricted from certain career because of your race.
