Our group has found success in increasing cognitive engagement by using active questioning techniques during lessons. Instead of asking simple recall questions, we pose open-ended, thought-provoking questions that require students to analyze, evaluate, or create. For example:

"How would you apply this concept to solve a real-world problem?"

Greeting students at the door so I can get to know my students personally and learning what they have going on in their lives. Then remembering to check in with them on the information they have shared with me lets them know that I remember and care about them.
