         <description><![CDATA[<p>Challenge: no/inconsistent/minimal pay opportunities in summer (we can do 12 month pay but that significantly lowers our 10 month pay)</p><p><br/></p><p>solution: create summer opportunities for all educators (developing lessons or activities, working with districts to prepare for the new year, streamlining access to online resources, training/giving PD to other educators), increase salaries (so when an educator chooses 12 month pay the hit isn't as hard), create leadership cohorts throughout the year that target areas of need (specific to the state, district, or region deficits or needs) that offers additional pay so educators can save for the summer, keep summer school and offer to all students (not just major testing grades). </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Challenge:  Disconnect between legislators and those making policies with classroom teachers who are on the frontlines.</p><p><br/></p><p>Solution:  Create more ways for educators to provide input (from all over the state).  Give NCAE a seat at the table to advocate.  Create more advisory groups.  Help educate the legislators about what is happening in schools before they put a bill out.</p>]]></description>

         <title>School Calendar</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Challenge:  Calendar law is inequitable and frustrating.  Not every district is following the calendar law, and charter and private schools don't have to follow it.  The current calendar law doesn't sync up well with community colleges, and we have a lot of kids taking college classes while in high school.</p><p><br/></p><p>Solution:  Put the school calendar fully back under local control.  Educate the public and legislators that local populations can elect their school board who can then make a local decision about the calendar that fits local needs.</p>]]></description>

It is the same across the board and that is the reason I believe there&#39;s so many vacancies across the state. We also have very high caseloads and it&#39;s only supposed to be 250 per counselor. </title>

         <title>Ways to Save Money</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Challenge:  Traditional public schools are underfunded.  Healthcare and retirement benefits could be in jeopardy without enough funding.  Taxes are being cut, and the federal government may end their funding, turning things back over to the state.</p><p><br/></p><p>Solution:  One solution is to eliminate vouchers completely.  A second solution is to at least freeze any tax cuts for the next several years, and possibly create a special penny sales tax specifically for funding public schools.</p>]]></description>

Please have a group teachers can apply to be on to preview research based resources to teach the standards. Once the top 3 choices have been made send the resources to the schools for teachers to review and vote on. There are currently no science resources but students take EOGs in fifth grade.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>All students free breakfast and lunch (heck, even afternoon/morning snack). </p><p><br/></p><p>Breakfasts and lunches need to be made in the kitchen (atleast some), not heated up in the plastic package they come in and given to students. 90% or more of our breakfast options are served to the students in plastic. Bring back eggs, sausage, bacon, grits, toast, etc. </p><p><br/></p><p>4 student facing days a week, three floating Friday workdays (teacher choice) each month, one Friday is a mental health day. </p><p><br/></p><p>Bring back the PEOPLE. Support is vital. No such thing as "too much support". </p><p><br/></p><p>Strong PTAs in every school! </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Challenge: Inappropriate developmental practices in elementary school. Teachers have to implement so many programs (with fidelity) that the joy of learning is being lost. Elementary students are having increased behavior problems due to the fact that what we’re asking them to do is not developmentally appropriate. </p><p><br></p><p>Solution: Bring back ‘play’ within the classroom. Limit the number of programs that are mandated. Give teachers more ownership and flexibility within the classrooms! </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Our schools could really benefit from a massive statewide infrastructure bond (like what Gov. Stein has proposed but larger).  We have so many crumbling schools in every LEA with poor HVAC, leaky roofs and students crammed 40-45 in trailers.   Our counties (which are primarily responsible for funding our own infrastructure) are growing so quickly we can barely build enough new schools to keep up with the growth and have very little funding left over to repair and upgrade the older facilities most of our students attend.  Students who attend nice facilities feel pride in their surroundings and feel worthy of the digs and to an extent that is reflected in their attitudes about their learning.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I’d love to have a better partnership with schools and parents, that we work together for the success and well-being of all NC children.&nbsp; North Carolina needs to be a leader in education, not just looking at other states to see what they do first.&nbsp; Teachers should be treated with respect and given support we need, which includes time and funding for quality professional development.&nbsp; And that parents have the resources they need to help their children at home and have access to fully funded pre-K programs.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>But, we need more teachers providing voice on major decisions, and I’d love to get more involved at opportunities like advisory groups and listening sessions.&nbsp; But one big idea is that NCAE is given a seat at the table and that we can collectively bargain in this state.</p>]]></description>
