Hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infections. It removes germs from your hands and prevents spreading them to others, helping to keep both you and the people around you safe from infections. It's important to wash your hands before and after servicing each client, before and after eating, and after using the restroom.

Disinfecting is the process that eliminates most microorganisms on non porous surfaces using a disinfectant. It's important to keep in mind that this is not effective against bacterial spores. To destroy spores, you must also sterilize.

After thoroughly cleaning your tools and implements, it's time to place them in a disinfectant solution. They must be fully submerged for ten minutes, or for the disinfectant manufacturer recommended time. You must still follow the manufacturer recommended time even when using sprays, wipes, or aerosol disinfectants to make sure all pathogens on the label are destroyed.

Your immune system is a key part of preventing and dealing with infections. Immunity against pathogens and infections can be natural or built up over time.

Natural immunity is both inherited and developed through a healthy lifestyle, while acquired immunity is developed after overcoming a disease. This can be done through vaccinations or through exposure to natural allergens, like pet dander or pollen.

When a disease is able to transfer from one person to another, it's called a contagious or communicable disease. Some of these diseases can prevent a beauty professional from servicing a client, such as the common cold and ringworm.

Two types of infection include local infections and systematic infections. Local infections are confined to a specific area of the body and appears as a lesion including pus, like a pimple or an abscess.
