Here are the reasons Dally is a Logistician. The first reason is because he meets obligations no matter the personal cost. “‘I been carrying a heater, it ain’t loaded, but it sure does help a bluff.’... And even as the policemen’s guns spit fire into the night I knew that was what Dally wanted”(153 and 154) In the scene of Dally’s death, Dally wanted to be with Johnny. Johnny was someone he needed. He wanted to be with him so badly, he was willing to die. There was a lot of personal cost involved, but he got to be with Johnny. The next reason is because he expects people to grasp the situation immediately and understand what is going on.“‘Hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville’ Dally instructed. ‘There’s an old abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain. There’s a pump so don’t worry about water. Buy a week’s supply of food as soon as you get there” (61). Dally was quick to try to help Johnny and Pony, and he was trying to get them to understand what to do right away.

Dally’s weaknesses represent the weaknesses of a Logistician because he unreasonably blames himself. “‘Dally was standing there and when he saw us he screamed, “For Pete’s sake, get outta! That roof’s gonna cave any minute’... Suddenly I realized, horrified, Dally was crying” (93). Dally didn’t want either Johnny or Ponyboy to get hurt and when Johnny got hurt really bad. He thought it was his fault and cried.

Dally's Motivation

Dally’s motivation lies in the gang, but mainly Johnny is his motivation. “But I knew that was what (Dally) wanted, even as the lot echoed with the cracks of shots” (154). Dally is so motivated by the gang, that when one of them, especially the one he loves the most (Johnny) dies. His motivation is taken away from him and he feels like it was his fault. As a result, he wishes he were dead and gives in to his unstable emotions. This is why Dally let himself die after Johnny died.

Dally's Character Type

Dally is a protagonist. He is a protagonist because he supports Pony and helps him (doesn’t work against him). “ ‘Take care, kid,’ he said softly. ‘Sure, Dally, thanks’ ” (62). The quote shows how Dally cares about Ponyboy and is willing to help him. Dally is a static character because he goes through an event that changes him emotionally. “‘Johnny, don’t die, please don’t die…’ He suddenly bolted through the door and down the hall” (149). Dally is also a round character because he has many emotions and layers of personality. In the first quote in this paragraph, we can see he has a plan laid out and is helpful. In the second quote we see that he can be emotionally unstable and unable to help the situation. These are two different emotion. Those were Dally’s character types.

Integral Setting: Why

In the Outsiders, one of the main settings is Integral. There are many events in the story that would be affected if the setting changed. For instance, the church is an integral setting because if it hadn't happened in that old church it probably wouldn’t have caught on fire. The church catching on fire is a big part in the story because the fire leads to Johnny and Dally’s deaths, which are major events in the story. “Johnny, well, I don’t know about him. A piece of timber caught him across the back- he might have a broken back, and he was burned pretty severely (95). The quote shows how important the fire was because it explains Johnny’s severe injuries, but if he hadn’t gotten burned the story would be very different. The severe injuries eventually lead to his death. “‘Stay gold Ponyboy, Stay gold…’The pillow seemed to sink a little, then Johnny died” (148). Johnny died because of the severe burns and broken back, but he wouldn’t have died if the old church had caught fire. Johnny’s death later lead to Dally’s death. This is an important part in the story. The church is an integral setting in the book because it played a key role in Johnny and Dally’s deaths.

Conflict: How

Conflict is used in the story by showing how the characters are split into two groups and sometimes fight against each other. The main conflict in the story is Person vs Society. Ponyboy said, “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped… We get jumped by the Socs… the Socials, the West-side rich kids… We’re poorer than the Socs and the middle class”(2-3).The author set up the story by making the Socs more wealthy than the Greasers. Having that wealth makes the Socs feel powerful, like they can do anything they want. In result of that wealth, they jump to greasers for fun. The Socs and greasers don’t like each other and they always fight. The Socs like to hurt the greasers and the greasers like to hurt them too. “While he was prying my fingers loose, Dally knocked him backward, so that all three of us rolled on the ground, gasping, cussing and punching”(144). The Socs and greasers are always fighting and they always take things to the extreme. The Socs and greasers can’t get along which is why it’s Person vs Society. The author wanted the two sides to always disagree so he put in the the Socs were rich and the greasers were poor, this makes it so that they have basically nothing in common. This makes the Socs feel like they have more power over the greasers, so they try to control them and in result the greasers fight them.

Conflict: Why

In the Outsiders one of the main conflicts is Person vs Society. First of all the Socs and the Greasers are always disagreeing and fighting with each other. It is a group of people versus another group of people, so it would be Person vs Society. Johnny and Ponyboy wanted to run away because of all the stress in their lives. They decided to stop by the park, but they were in for a surprise.“”Nup, pal, yer the ones who better watch it.’... the Soc caught my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face into the fountain... I fought again desperately but only sucked in water. I’m drowning”(55-56) The Socs got mad at the greasers for picking up their girls. They got so mad they had followed them to the park to get revenge. In result of that they tried to kill Ponyboy because of the anger they felt for the greasers. The greasers and the Socs really don’t like each other and they are enemies, they will often fight the first to run loses. “(Paul) was looking at Darry with an expression I couldn’t quite place, but disliked. Contempt? Pity? Hate? All three? Why? Because DArry was standing there representing all of us, and maybe Paul felt only contempt and pity and hate for the greasers?”(142). Paul (and the Socs) really hate the greasers and can’t help it. They let their emotions control them, and since they hate each other they fight. These split up Ponyboy and the Socs, so it is Person vs Society.
