Students come up with ideas or goals for their writing. They will select one idea and they will organize their thoughts in some way. They will make sure that they know who their reader is going to be and that they know the purpose of their pieces. They map out what they plan to do in their piece and create a plan for themselves to help them get started. This step will help them down the road when they re actually writing and they feel "stuck".

Students jump in and write! They get their ideas on paper without much focus on correctness of conventions used. They create something that they can begin working from. This is often known to students as create a rough draft. Sometimes during the drafting process, students will make changes to their original topics, plans or even the purpose of their writing. This is perfectly fine, and helps students down the road as they learn to revise.

The student makes changes for grammatical correctness and spelling. They make sure that their sentences make sense and there are no mistakes. Sometimes before this stage, students need to step away from their writing for a few days to be able to look at it with fresh eyes and catch mistakes that they may have missed before. Like revising, this can be challenging for students and requires patience and attention to detail. It is a skill that students must practice in order to be proficient in.

Students identify areas in their work that can be improved upon. They make changes and use the skills that they gain in mini lessons and learn from mentor texts to create more complex and descriptive writing. Feedback from peers and teachers can help students identify areas that they can improve on. This can be a challenging step for students because of the patience and reflection that it takes to see where one can improve their own work. With that said, all students can learn to write and the sooner they learn how to revise, the quicker their writing will improve.
