People felt isolated in this era because they were constantly labeling each other. They acted tough around others for protection because everybody was so judgmental, but once they were alone they were inferior compared to others. As well as them being on the ranch, the were always competing against each other and were typically in conflict.

Crook’s prefers to not be around the other men at the ranch, or he is just rejected so often that he has become used to the isolation. This can do him both good and bad. Being alone all the time can make you a little bit crazy, but the men at the ranch would not hesitate to shut Crook’s out and ignore him completely. If Lennie were isolated, he would never have gotten involved with Curley. He would never have crushed his hand and been shot by George. But because he’s such an open person, he likes to talk to other people, even though George doesn’t want him to, but George’s reason for that is because Lennie gets himself into trouble.

Towards the start of the book, when they just got work at the ranch, they were definitely isolated from the rest of the men. Everybody was confused, and curious to why two men were travelling and trying to find work together, as the norm was to do so by oneself.
