The Hardware of a Computer is basically all the phisical parts of it, all the parts you can feel or touch, just like the Hard Drive. Not only the parts of the Computer are described as the Hardware, but also the Computer as a whole. The computer is basically a box containing the important components that make the Computer run. This components can vary depending on the Brand and the Model of the Computer.

Although the Hardware of the Computers vary, there's a simple structure that every Computer have in common. This structure was invented by John Von Neumann in 1945. The Von Neumann architecture shows that every Computer should have these principal components:

Memory: Physical device used to store programs or data on a temporary or permanent basis for use in the Computer.

Control Unit: The control unit is a component of a computer's central processing unit (CPU) which directs operation of the processor.

Arithmetic Logic Unit: Digital circuit that performs integer arithmetic and logical operations.

Input and Output: Communication between an information processing system and the outside world, possibly a human or another information processing system.

Link: http://www.ecommerce-web-hosting-guide.com/what-is-computer-hardware.html

Software is a general term for the various kinds of programs used to operate computers and related devices. (The term hardware describes the physical aspects of computers and related devices.)

Software can be thought of as the variable part of a computer and hardware the invariable part. Software is often divided into application software (programs that do work users are directly interested in) and system software (which includes operation systems and any program that supports application software). The term middleware is sometimes used to describe programming that mediates between application and system software or between two different kinds of application software (for example, sending a remote work request from an application in a computer that has one kind of operating system to an application in a computer with a different operating system).

Software can be purchased or acquired as shareware (usually intended for sale after a trial period), liteware (shareware with some capabilities disabled), freeware (free software but with copyright restrictions), public domain software (free with no restrictions), and open source (software where the source code is furnished and users agree not to limit the distribution of improvements).

Link: http://searchsoa.techtarget.com/definition/software

An operating system (OS) is software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs. The operating system is an essential component of the system software in a computer system. Application programs usually require an operating system to function.
Time-sharing operating systems schedule tasks for efficient use of the system and may also include accounting software for cost allocation of processor time, mass storage, printing, and other resources.
For hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, the operating system acts as an intermediary between programs and the computer hardware, although the application code is usually executed directly by the hardware and will frequently make a system call to an OS function or be interrupted by it. Operating systems can be found on almost any device that contains a computer—from cellular phones and video game consoles to supercomputers and web servers.

There are a lot of Operating Systems from diferent vendors. The more famous ones are:

IOS 7 from Apple. This OS is used in Touch Devices just like Ipod Touch, Iphone and Ipad.

WINDOWS 7 from Microsoft. This OS is used in Computers, Tablets and Smartphones too.

JELLY BEAN from Google. This OS is used in Tablets and Smartphones

Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system

A virtual machine (VM) is a software program or operating system that not only exhibits the behavior of a separate computer, but is also capable of performing tasks such as running applications and programs like a separate computer. A virtual machine, usually known as a guest is created within another computing environment referred as a "host." Multiple virtual machines can exist within a single host at one time.

A virtual machine is also known as a guest.

Virtual machines are becoming more common with the evolution of virtualization technology. Virtual machines are often created to perform certain tasks that are different than tasks performed in a host environment.

Virtual machines are implemented by software emulation methods or hardware virtualization techniques. Depending on their use and level of correspondence to any physical computer, virtual machines can be divided into two categories:

System Virtual Machines: A system platform that supports the sharing of the host computer's physical resources between multiple virtual machines, each running with its own copy of the operating system. The virtualization technique is provided by a software layer known as a hypervisor, which can run either on bare hardware or on top of an operating system.

Process Virtual Machine: Designed to provide a platform-independent programming environment that masks the information of the underlying hardware or operating system and allows program execution to take place in the same way on any given platform.

Link: http://www.techopedia.com/definition/4805/virtual-machine-vm
