I find it extremely valuable to learn to appreciate all forms and styles of music. This is not implying that you must enjoy it all, we're allowed to have our favorites. Appreciation is recognizing all musical styles as beneficial and something to benefit from.
I've looked into the heavy death metal music because it's the music I listen to the least.

What Is Death Metal Music?

Death metal can be technically defined as music (usually in a minor key) featuring growling vocals, low tuned guitars, double kick drums, key changes and chromatic progressions, and abrupt tempo.

The lyrical aspect can involve violence, dark themes such as torture and sadism, religion (usually associated with satanism), philosophy, nature, horror, and even politics. Death Metal has been known to have a strong focus on details of violence and extreme act such as mutilation of a person or creature and cannibalism.

This kind of music is commonly associated with the emotions of anger, sorrow, depression, loneliness, and hatred. However, this is a generalization. These themes would apply to bands such as Kreator, Venom, and Slayer. Memphis May Fire (who exist in the Christian labelled genres of music), however, carry a different theme in their lyrics that are more geared to a hopeful message and this feeling of somebody being there for you.

The lyrics can very greatly, but the musical style is going to be our focus: the sad and/or angry sounds, speed of the music, instrumentation and instrument effects, and vocal effects.

Cultural And Social Impact

Death Metal is actually a sub-genre of heavy metal and began in the 1980's. It's peak popularity was during the early 90's, about 92' to 93'. It never reached into the mainstream of music however. It did lead to more sub-genres being created such as black metal, melodic death metal, death-grind, and many more. It's popularity may have been a reaction of the rivalry between Swedish Death Metal and Norwegian Black Metal. Death Metal does still have a very present "underground" following.

The original purpose for the general genre of heavy metal was to accomplish a similar task of 1960's and 1970's "hippie" music: spread an idea of a solution for a cultural problem. It was to present a realistic solution to a real world and modern day problem, and the present time of death metal's birth, the Vietnam War and Cold War.

Heavy metal and death metal have had their impact on other forms of music, introducing this idea of distortion and dark themes such as the evil nature of humans and dark realities of the world. It has even injected itself into the movies and newspaper by growing the idea that there isn't always going to be happy news and sometimes there needs to be talk of saddening realities and depressing topics. It also contributed to modern day thoughts of processing and breaking down controversial thoughts and opinions, instead of immediately dismissing them due to their dark nature. I've personally had friends who listen to quite a bit of death metal and heavy metal and they've brought up very interesting ideas, such as the creation of the universe or potential benefits of controversial political ideas, that the average person doesn't think of, perhaps because the average person is scared of or ashamed to think of these thoughts. They can bring up the questioning of good and bad: "Why is this good? Why is this bad?"

I can appreciate the idea of diving into controversial thoughts, but not having to fully agree with them, because sometimes that can lead to beneficial solutions. It can be a great irony at times, like looking into a violent idea to find a peaceful solution.

However, I can't find my self enjoying this music. I find it very rare to benefit from the lyrics of these songs because most often they do not lead to ground breaking ideas, but just blatantly pouring out harmful ideas of depression and harm to others or yourself. I cannot find value in the common lyrics of death metal.

It's not all just about lyrics, however, I also find a very hard time connecting to the musical aspects. I am not against, nor do I discredit, the musical aspects of this genre. I have nothing against the minor keys or guitar riffs or growling vocals, they just simply aren't my cup of tea. I appreciate these sounds of music, but it's hard for me to like it. My example of this would be Memphis May Fire: I like the lyrical message, but I have a hard time enjoying the instrumentation.
