Process
When I first read about the assignments for this subject, an idea for the promotional video instantly popped into my head. The topic was close to my heart and therefore something I believed I could execute well. I then read through all of the steps to the final assessment and I began to feel a little anxious about the task ahead of me.I decided I would take the activities week by week so the assessments didn't overwhelm me.

The week 1 activity, developing 80 promotional, ideas challenged me. I easily managed around 35 ideas and then struggled to develop more. I became distracted and started focusing on other things. I left the task and came back later that night to develop more. In hindsight, this helped to expand my thinking as I came back with fresh ideas and was able to find 80. This task really helped in understanding how to develop a strong idea and challenge your thought process. The exercise was a great way for me to push my creative brain.

Concept
I am making a promotional video for my football club, the Brunswick Renegades. I play in a woman's AFL league and this has been a great way for me to make friends, stay fit and develop great skills. Since the AFLW started in 2017, local communities are seeing a growth in women wanting to play AFL and clubs are expanding to include women's' teams. I want to develop a video to recruit new players for the 2020 season.

In my video I want to highlight how inclusive the Brunswick Renegades are, how we perform on the field and the benefits of playing football ( such as friendship, healthy competition, community engagement). I want to highlight that the club is a safe space for players and is inclusive to players who identify as non-binary.

Mind Map exercise reflections

What has the experience shown me about my product?
I enjoyed crafting my mind map. It took me a while to let the ideas flow without censorship and the task took a while to complete. The mind map has helped me understand the positives of women playing football, and the negatives. There are many benefits of women football clubs such as community engagement, financial incentives and a safe space for women to create a strong friendships. There are also negative assumptions in the community such as women shouldn't play such a rough contact sport, women get injured and the types of women that play football. The issue can divide the community and it has strengthened my resolve to make a video highlighting the benefits to squash the negative assumptions.

Was it difficult to explore the product so deeply?
I found it hard to think of my product from other perspectives. It felt uncomfortable to change my thought process from 'women can play football', to 'it's unsafe and women's bodies are not up for it'. I had to challenge my own assumptions to develop a contrasting narrative to the positives I experience every day. Although I don't necessarily believe the contrasting ideas, it did help me to understand that people from different backgrounds view women in football very differently. The overall experience enabled me to challenge my own beliefs and develop stronger examples for both sides of the argument.

Did it help me come up with new ideas for my product?
The exercise helped me to understand why it is important about to engage women in sport. I asked football friends to share some of their experiences they have come across when telling people they play AFL. This led to an emotional discussion about why they play and continue to push against the negative assumptions. I was able to develop more ideas for my mind map following this exercise, such as the benefit to community and the benefit to the person. I was also able to note down some of the negative assumptions that I was unable to think of myself. The overall experience helped me to develop a stronger understanding of my topic and enabled me to flesh out some of the ideas I have for my promotional video.

Stronach, M, Maxwell, H & Pearce, S 2019, ‘Indigenous Australian women promoting health through sport’, Sport Management Review, vol. 22, no. 1, pp. 5–20.

Stronach, Maxwell and Pearce argue that empowering indigenous women to play sport is imperative to developing healthy diverse role models to lead the community (Stronach, Maxwell & Pearce 2019). This peer reviewed journal article is relevant to my research topic as it highlights a community that can benefit from engaging with a community football team. Creating a safe space for the indigenous community to engage with sport has many benefits to the individuals, and the wider community. The recent appointment of indigenous woman Tanya Hosch into the board of the Australian Football league proves that the community is taking engagement seriously. Women play sport for several reasons and sport has the capacity to provide certain incentives such as the elation of winning, the pleasure of group activities and healthy competing (Stronach, Maxwell & Pearce 2019, p. 6). These incentives are an important part of the Brunswick Football Club agenda and it will be great to include these in the promotional video to advertise to other communities.

Burton, LJ 2015, ‘Underrepresentation of women in sport leadership: A review of research’, Sport Management Review, vol. 18, no. 2, pp. 155–165.

Burton argues that women still face challenges, such as discrimination, when seeking leadership positions in sport (Burton 2015). The author from the University of Connecticut highlights that sport organisations are based on a masculine conception of operating; men are considered powerful and therefore placed in higher positions whereas women are considered compliant and undertake more clerical work (Burton 2015, p. 158). This paper is important to my research as it highlights the stereotypes I must address when emphasising how important it is to have a female coach and how to encourage more females into leadership positions. The article has been peer reviewed and cited in 34 publications since 2015.

Bianchi, A 2017, ‘Transgender women in sport’, Journal of the Philosophy of Sport, vol. 44, no. 2, pp. 229–242.

Bianchi contends that transgender women should be able to sport in accordance with their gender identity (Bianchi 2017). One main argument for transgender women not playing in a women's sport is that they have a higher level of testosterone, which may make them perform to a higher standard than cisgender women (Bianchi 2017, p. 231). Research has suggested that having a high level of testosterone does not guarantee increased performance rather; it is how the body reacts to this testosterone increase (Bianchi 2017, p. 233). This research allowed me to identify different opinions in allowing transgender women to play in a woman’s sport, and how to make the competition fair by judging people on their ability and not their sex. Allowing transgender women to play with cisgender women is an important factor in creating a safe and accepting football club and this peer reviewed article enabled me to understand how clubs can become more accepting and what to address when promoting the Brunswick Football Club.

Berenbaum, E & Latimer-Cheung, AE 2014, ‘Examining the link between framed physical activity ads and behavior among women’, Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, vol. 36, no. 3, pp. 271–280.

Berenbaum and Latimer- Cheung discuss the impact that framed messages have when advertising the benefits of physical activity to women (Berenbaum & Latimer- Cheug 2014). Framed messaging is presenting information to a target audience in different ways, either emphasising the benefits (gain-framed) or costs (low framed) associated with engaging in a particular behaviour (Berenbaum & Latimer- Cheung 2014, p. 271). Gain framed messages produce greater amounts of attention, better recall and a positive attitude (Berenbaum & Latimer- Cheung 2014, p. 279). This enforces the importance of focusing on the benefit of joining; such as culture, physical exercise and friends, rather than presenting loss framed messages, such as the physical cost or mental cost for not joining. This article has been peer-reviewed and cited by 5 sources since publication.

Cunningham, G & Melton, E 2014, ‘Signals and Cues: LGBT Inclusive Advertising and Consumer Attraction’, Sport Marketing Quarterly, vol. 23, no. 1, pp. 37–46.

Cunningham and Melton conclude fitness clubs that promote LGBT inclusive language are perceived to be diverse and inclusive (Cunningham & Melton 2014). Sports clubs need to develop LGBT inclusive policies to improve organisational outcomes and to attract a more diverse customer base (Cunningham & Melton 2014, p. 44). This is an important factor in developing a women’s football club as having a strong gay community and promoting LGBT inclusive language is an indicator that a place is open to many diverse people (Cunningham & Melton 2014, p. 39). This research highlights the importance to develop inclusive language when creating my promotional video as the Brunswick Football Club promotes itself as an inclusive club and I would like to highlight this.

Willson, T, Gorman, E, Creagh, L, Magladry, M & Efthimiou, O 2018, ‘Framing the women’s AFL: contested spaces and emerging narratives of hope and opportunity for women in sport’, Sport in Society, vol. 21, no. 11, pp. 1704–1720.

Wilson et al. (2018) discusses the history and inclusion of females in AFLW and how the community still has a way to go in embracing females in typically male dominated sports. The female rate of participants registered to play Australian rules football has risen from 6500 in 2004, to over 9000 in 2018 (Wilson et al. 2018, p. 1711). An example of the AFL embracing female participants is the Auskick website, which features boys and girls playing against each other while the girl is shown to be larger and performing a more active movement than the boy (Wilson et al. 2018, p. 1714). This research has helped me to understand how the community and the AFL view female participation in the sport and the demographic of females wishing to join. This highlights to me that when creating my promotional video, I will need to include teen girls as well as they are the emerging AFLW stars and it is important to get them into the game young as they now can do so.

Aliotta, C 2013, ‘Evoke emotion through typography’, Joogpot, viewed 11 July 2019, <http://joogpot.eu/knowledge/16-webdesign/57-evoke-emotion-through-typography>

Chiara Aliotta explained the benefits of using typography to elicit different emotions in target audiences. I want to portray a sense of credibility on my website and this website has confirmed that I should only use 2 typefaces and should stick with a classic font.

Idler, S 2012, ‘15 Practical tips how to use typography for emotional design’, blog post, CX insights, 6 December, viewed 11 July 2019, <https://usabilla.com/blog/15-practical-tips-how-to-use-typography-for-emotional-web-design/>

Sabrina Idler (2012) identified several examples that showcased the benefits of using different typography. The blog helped me to understand that I can add my own personality into the website by the typography that I use. I would like to use a style that evokes a sense of unity between my video and website, to the Brunswick Football club website.

Lofgren, L 2019, ‘The physcolgy of Color’, blog post, Quicksprout, 17 April, viewed 11 July 2019, <https://www.quicksprout.com/psychology-of-color/>

Lars Lofgren (2019) enabled me to identify my target audience and what colour scheme would work well for promoting to women. Even though the Brunswick Football Club has a men’s division as well as a female team, the colour scheme is the same for clubs; purple and green. This indicates that it may be more designed for a female audience as more women enjoy the colour purple. This website also helped me to understand colour difference and brightness. I will be referring to this website throughout the development of my video and website as I found the information highly useful.

AFLWomen's 2019, This is GenW. This is AFLW. 2019. The video explains, by visuals only, what sort of people get around the AFLW, be it women, girls, men and dads. This video helped me to understand how text can be used to explain what the video wants to say without voice over.

West Brunswick Amateur Football Club 2019, West Brunswick is Great, video, YouTube, 3 March, viewed 17 July 2019, <https://youtu.be/bfESx0-rBO8>.

This video produced by The West Brunswick Football Club is engaging and entertaining. I really like how they have used vox pops mixed with video footage of the teams playing to demonstrate the story of an inclusive club. The West Brunswick Football Club is direct competition to the Brunswick Renegades, due to location, so understanding what has been done and how to do it better is important to getting players to join up to the Brunswick Renegades.

Youth Girls 2019, 2014 AFL Victoria TAC Youth Girls Academy Launch, video, YouTube 25 September, viewed 24 July 2019, <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zLct8SdtpI>.

This video helped me to identify different ways to film a football club, i.e. different camera angles, focus pulling and interviews. The target audience is different to mine in relation to age, but the video captures a similar message and filming style that I would like to use for my video.

ABC news 2018, ‘Heywire: Darliah’, ABC News, 26 August, viewed 24 July 2019, < https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-08-26/heywire:-darliah/10166672>.

The Heywire video focuses on a teenage AFL star Darliah Killer as she tells the audience what it is about her team that she loves and how the community has gotten around the club.

This week I reached out to the coach and president of the Brunswick Renegades and asked if there were any topics the club would like focused on in the video. The coach advised that I have widespread support from the club to create this video and anything created for the Brunswick Renegades needs to stay in line with the club's values: respect & inclusiveness, striving for excellence, leadership, family & community, honesty, integrity and openness.

I also began developing my website this week. I was nervous about developing a website using HTML code as this is a new experience for me and code has always looked like another language. The resources within the UniSA portal really helped me to get an understanding of how to read HTML and how to use the basics to edit a web page. I really enjoyed reading about HTML and experimenting with my website on the different things it can do. I have also mastered how to embed a link into HTML with the inclusion of my padlet journal into the second tab of my website. I am feeling confident with my basic knowledge to create an interesting web page for this assignment and I am looking forward to experimenting further with HTML.

The Clubs website has a lot of purple and green headings with black and white text. The colour of the jumpers that player wear are green and purple.

Join the Brunswick Renegades

The title screen is black while the sound of a siren is faintly heard. The screen brightens and we see Josie from behind wearing the Brunswick Renegade training jumper with a bag over her shoulder walking in to the club rooms. We then see a group of 10 players out on the oval kicking footballs to each other. They are all in the Brunswick Renegade colours and performing a hand pass drill with ease. Each player is laughing a having a good time. The coach then walks out onto the oval to instruct the players on what positions they are playing for the day. Several players walk up to the coach and we see that each player is unique by size, skin colour and gender identification.

Several photographs appear on screen, blocking out the training. The photos depict the Renegades playing AFL against other women’s teams. In each photo the Renegade player is seen to be performing well and we see a team that is competitive. The audio begins and we hear 3 examples of why the Brunswick Renegades are a good team to join and why current players have joined such an inclusive team.

Finally, the image returns to the coach in the change rooms. The coach says the last encouraging words and the players all cheer, ready to get out onto the field and defend their title. The Captain looks to the coach, smiles and begins the run out of the club rooms. The players are happy and joyful as they run onto the oval and the spectators cheer the team on. Once on the field, the Renegades all put their hands into a circle and start to cheer “Ra Ra Ra Renegades”. They slap each other on the back and move into their positions on the field. The screen fades to black and a title fades in to focus, ‘Join the Brunswick Renegades. http://brunswickfootball.org.au/women/renegades/’. End.

This week I started looking for examples of promotional videos for football clubs in a hope to get an idea of what works well. I struggled to find examples of women football clubs using a broad YouTube search as most of the videos were about the men's professional AFL. This highlights to me that women football clubs are still evolving and haven't yet developed a strong online presence.

I expanded my search field to focus on some of the teams in my league. This yielded better results and I was able to find the promotional video for the West Brunswick Football Club. The video has players speaking directly to camera explaining what the club means to them with overlay of both the men's and women's teams competing. The music and upbeat feel of the video really highlighted to me that the team is inclusive and a fun team to get involved in. I think the video succeeds in showcasing the positive community in the West Brunswick Football Club. I will focus on instilling the same sense of community and fun in my promotional video.

The West Brunswick Football Club targets a similar the same as the Brunswick Renegades so I have to develop a video with a point of difference to convince players to join the Brunswick Renegades. My video will stand out as I will use images that showcases the Brunswick Renegades supporting each other and performing well on the field.

The team played their last home game of the home and away season on the weekend and I used this as a perfect opportunity to film. I printed out talent release forms and went to the oval early to capture the players rocking up. I had a few players express interest in being in the video and I filmed short vox pops with them before the game started. I want to use this sound in the video to highlight why players have chosen to play for the Brunswick Renegades and what the team means to them. I recorded footage of the game which I can use as overlay to the vox pops. Having the treatment written early really helped me to identify what images to capture and I was able to target specific shots. I want to make sure that every image in my video is my own work for this assignment and I believe I will be able to do so with the amount of images captured on the weekend.

This week I started editing my promotional video. I have been looking forward to this since I decided on the topic for this assignment and am excited to see the video take shape.

So far I have developed a story to match the treatment although I have missed a few key shots that I had included in my treatment. I filmed a live game so the footage differs slightly from the footage noted in version 1 of my treatment.

I am going to use fast cuts to keep the audience engaged and keep the story moving. I want the video to feel engaging so people will want to join the club.

Sound
I have found copyright free music file via bensound.com.au and have imported this to play as track 1 under the video. The soundtrack is an upbeat 'rock' style which makes you feel engaged and motivated. I have also incorporated sound from the footage of the Renegades cheering to instantly draw the attention of the audience at the beginning of the video. This is meant to advertise to the audience what the tone of the video is.

I have finished editing! I really enjoyed this process and and enjoyed making a story out of the footage captured. I have kept the mood upbeat and I believe it captures the audiences attention and instils a sense of fun within the audience.

I have had to change my treatment due to the footage I had and the way i wanted to tell the story. I decided to focus on the team as a whole rather then individual players as I want to portray a team environment and I want to show the players all getting along well with each other. The treatment isn't too different from version 1 but there are slight differences in the layout of the video.

I also had some trouble getting our non-binary players to speak to the camera as they felt uncomfortable doing so. As a result I have our assistant coach Ned speak and a few other women players. They still talk about what the club means to them and I am grateful for them stepping up.

The next step is to show players and the video and see what they think about it and whether it captures there attention.

I have been trying to update my website and finding CSS difficult to understand. Learning HTML was ok and I believe I got the basics pretty quickly. Learning CSS is proving a little more difficult. Learning how to edit the over arching codes and then having to edit individual codes for specific pages/ sections proved time consuming. Every time I seem to edit one thing, I seem to mess up something else. I have been spending nights trying to figure out how it works and I found the online sources very useful. I also found the most useful website of w3schools. It gives great hints on how CSS works.

I have enjoyed learning CSS and I am glad I have managed it for this assignment but I think I will need to experiment more.

I have finally figured out how to embed my video into my website! I had embedded the video from youtube but it didn't seem to be the way that was expected for this assignment. It was a smaller size and it just linked straight to youtube.
I ended up downloading 3 versions of the website template to practise with and took a few days experimenting with video codec and size etc, and I have finally cracked the code. Now my video sits within the website with a title image that plays the movie once played. I am so happy I have finally managed to make it work!!

After showing my video to players at the club, one player let me know that there was an old video made for the team in 2016 when the club was relativity new. I found the video on YouTube after a few searches. The video is similar to my promotional video in that it is a call to arms to join the Renegades for the 2017 season. The video is slower paced and has more footage of games. I think my video stands up as it is faster and drags you in within the first couple of seconds. I think my use of photos and video also helps to push the pace along.
It was great to see some old faces in the team but the Renegades have grown as a team and I think my video highlights how the club is forward thinking and inclusive and fun.
