How can one person have such a change of heart? The very first day Jude went to his studio, he flat out told her no he would not help her and to go away. Then when she goes back the very next day and burst out into tears, he says yes. In the beginning of the book, Oscar is this bad boy, mysterious kind of guy. When he meets Jude in the church, he knows for sure that she is the one. Oscar grew up without a mother basically. This event in his life led him to drink excessively, soon turning him into an alcoholic. Nelson chooses to have these characters be everyday humans. Their lives aren't perfect. For example, Noah is gay, Jude talks to dead people, and Oscar is a recovering alcoholic. I feel like Nelson talks about subjects that some people are afraid to talk/write about. I really enjoyed how she "blended" the characters so that every characters played a role in each others life.
