Also I feel like it's just more interesting because the story for me would be more boring if Monk just ended up saying "your hair cost $76.49.

The only thing lost was adding a bit more detail, but I think that might be purposeful and actually is a gain for this story. The other gains are the ability to bring focus to certain words, and a more controlled passing of time.
