If you are still developing your capacity in this space you could challenge yourself to learn how to pronounce names correctly. If you are in a Māori medium setting you might challenge yourself to remain in te reo Māori throughout every lesson to normalise its use. You might want to learn some new kīwaha/kīrehu as well to support your language development. Add this into a collection in your Pātaka Ako on te reo Māori & tikanga Māori in the classroom

Te reo Māori is a treasure. Language carries culture and we all have a responsibility to care for our indigenous language. Education through the punishing of Māori using their language in classrooms and a lack of prioritising it in classroom practice have been significant contributing factors to the decline of the language. Within the walls of our classrooms we have the capacity to place value and emphasis on te reo Māori and its use alongside tikanga Māori.

Views on te reo Māori can be polarising. This was highlighted recently with an interview that Marcus Lush had on Talk Back radio with a woman who challenged pronouncing words correctly. Unfortunately, choosing to honour our indigenous language with accurate pronunciation is still a political act.
