The conjunctions “when” and “while” are used to connect ideas in English, each with specific functions:

1.	Time relationships

	•	When indicates a specific moment or that two events happen at the same time.

	•	While expresses that two actions occur simultaneously over a period.

	•	Example: When the movie started, she turned off her phone. While he was studying, she prepared dinner.

2.	Cause and effect

	•	When can show the cause of an event.

	•	Example: When you heat water, it boils.

3.	Contrast

	•	While is used to contrast two opposing ideas.

	•	Example: While she enjoys hiking, he prefers the beach.

4.	Condition

	•	When can replace “if” to indicate conditions in the future.

	•	Example: When you arrive, let me know.

Each conjunction adds clarity to how ideas relate in a sentence.

Connectors in English are words or phrases with which two or more ideas can be related. There is a great diversity of connectors thanks to the fact that there are many ways to relate them, that is, sentences can be joined to complement each other, contradict each other, propose a cause or a conclusion, among other functions that are explained later. Their importance lies in the fact that they give variety and complexity to the oral or written expression of those who use them. Therefore, they are especially important in academic, work or formal environments in general, without forgetting that they can also be used in informal environments such as a conversation between friends. They can also be mentioned among its advantages that they provide consistency and coherence to the linguistic discourse, both in its written and oral form.
