Passchendaele has since become known as one of the most horrific battles of the First World War.          <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Germany entered into World War I on August 1, 1914</strong>, when it declared war on Russia. In accordance with its war plan, it ignored Russia and moved first against France–declaring war on August 3 and sending its main armies through Belgium to capture Paris from the north.</p><p>The German Empire <strong>declared war on the Russian Empire</strong>, following Russia's full military mobilization in support of Serbia.          <title>hill 70 1916</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>In Surviving Trench Warfare (1992) Bill Rawling wrote that the attack on Hill 70 cost the Canadian Corps 3,527 casualties, <strong>1,056 killed</strong>, 2,432 wounded and 39 taken prisoner. In the subsequent attacks into Lens, the Canadian Corps suffered another 5,671 casualties increasing the number to 9,198 men in eleven days.</p><p>The Canadian Corps captured Hill 70, near Lens, France, during the First World War. This and further attacks on Lens achieved the desired results, even though much of the town was still in German hands. <strong>Fighting from August 15 to 25 cost the Canadians almost 10,000 casualties (killed, wounded and missing)</strong>.</p><p><a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="zReHs" href="https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/services/military-history/history-heritage/casualty-identification-military/battle-hill-70-1917.html#:~:text=The%20Canadian%20Corps%20captured%20Hill,killed%2C%20wounded%20and%20missing)."><br></a></p>]]></description>
