The CELTA creates a reserve army of low-skilled workers driving down wages - which enables the 'big players' in ELT to continue to reap big profits.

On my CELTA nobody failed. One person got a failing grade for an observed lesson but the grade was changed after a 'chat' with the tutor.

CELTA is a market-driven qualification (see Block & Gray 2015 - http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/01434632.2015.1071826). Many working teachers have no control whatsoever over entry to their profession, ensuring a high turnover and low professionalism in many sectors.

In my 12-week CELTA training, the topic of teaching for tests (First Certificate or other) was not addressed and neither was the topic of assessment. How are teachers expected to go into the profession, ignorant of such vital components of classroom instruction? Many adult learners wish to receive some form of English aptitude certification for professional reasons.

20+ years ago, 'good' private language schools aiming to offer quality lessons would provide their own training for new and unqualified 'teachers' each year (= a significant investment).
These schools froze all training after the 2008 financial crisis - they reflected that training was costly, and why invest when teachers would leave sooner or later anyway?
Nowadays, the training baton has been passed on to job applicants/teachers.
In inner-city 'good' language schools (unlike in rural areas where 'teachers' are thin on the ground) the policy is very much: No CELTA, no job.
@chriscattaneo

Now that the CELTYL and YL extension courses are no longer with us, and teaching children is a key part of the future, could a 21st-century CELTA see trainers placing much more focus on YL teaching skills in the timetable?
