The Uplift Group

This is a small group of fourteen- and fifteen-year-old students nineth gade students at Southwest High School. This small group session will help address the needs of support for students that are victims of bullying. It will help boost their morale. It is designed to help students set goals to overcome the issues caused by bullying, such as self- image issues, struggling academically, and struggling mentally and socially. It was determined through a needs assessment survey that nineth grade students were suffering academically, socially and mentally from bullying and needed intervention to succeed,

Consent

The students will be given a consent form to be signed by their parent. They will give the signed consent form to the counselor on the first group meeting.

The group participants will adhere to the following ACA Mindsets and Behaviors:

M 1. Belief in development of whole self, including a healthy balance of mental, social/emotional and physical well-being.

M 2. Sense of acceptance, respect, support and inclusion for self and others in the school environment.

M 3. Positive attitude toward work and learning.

M 4. Self-confidence in ability to succeed

Group Pre-Screening

Anti -bullying fliers were posted around Southwest High School. The fliers contained information of how participants could join the Uplift Group. They will have to complete a form that is located in the school counselor's office. The forms will be in a basket by the door in the school counselor’s office. They will complete the form and place it in a box located beside the basket of forms. The completed form will inform the school counselor that intervention is needed for the student. The counselor will contact them and enroll them in the Uplift if they meet the qualifications for the group sessions.

Leadership Styles

This group will be utilizing the Participative Leadership Style, Each group participant will participate by sharing their bullying experience and how being bullied made them feel. The school counselor will guide the student into slowly achieving their goals of rebuilding their self -image. They will use activites and discussion and also support and interact with each other.

Anti -bullying fliers will be posted around Southwest High School. The fliers contain information of how participants could join the Uplift Group. They contain information of screening methods and time and dates of meetings. The nineth-grade first class teachers will distribute a flyer to all students that are interested in participation in the Uplift group.

Rules and Guidelines

Students may not feel comfortable with other students discussing topics and conversations that were discussed in the group with others that are not group members . Confidentiality must be adhered to the fullest amongst the group members. They are to follow the confidentiality agreement and not discuss anything that is discussed in the sessions with others.

Group Dynamics

This is nineth -grade students at Southwest High School. These are 14 and 15 year olds who are victims of extreme bullying.

Stage 1 consists of creating relationships among group members. Students will slowly rebuild their self-image that was damaged due to bullying. They will also focus on their mental and social health. Based on the needs assesment, there was distrust amongst the nine-graders. The Uplift program will aim to rebuild trust amongst students.

Stage 2 constist of group lead activities and discussions that will help build self -esteem. They will build trust by sharing their bullying experiences and openly discussing how this made them feel.

Stage 3 consists of an open discussion with the group members, The students will discuss what they have learned and how to avoid a repeat of the effects of bullying. They will also share ways continue to support each other after the group sessions have ended. Group members will keep in touch with each other and help build one another up. There will be a follow-up meeting to see where each member is at in their journey.

Theraputic Factors

There are several Yalom’s Therapeutic Factors that can be utilized in the Uplift group. Instillation of Hope can instill hope in the group members. Members can have faith that they can overcome being victims of being bullied. The students will have the support of the school counselor and their peers. They can begin the journey of rebuilding their self-esteem. The Universality factor allows the Uplift group to work as a team to openly discuss and use activities to rebuild their self-image. These students will work together lift and encourage each other.
