I believe there is one verse in the song that embodies the ideas of self-reliance perfectly.

Emerson's essay discusses the idea of being independent.  Lyrics such as "my intent is not to rent, I like to own what I value" discuss how the things you cherish should come from you because this will allow you to find true purpose in life.
