The Victorian Period's started date is a debated one. Some believe the start is in 1832 when the first Reform Bill was made. Others believe it started in 1837 when Queen Victoria rose to power whom the period is named for. Either way the Victorian period ended in 1901 with Queen Victoria's death.

The Time of Troubles dealt a lot with poverty, starvation and working laws, specifically for children. The amount of poor people living in this era was still very high and many of them could not vote. Child, though labor laws were changed during this time, worked in horrible conditions and many died doing this work. Many protests happened during this time about labor laws and the right to vote.

Charles Darwin wrote The Origin of Species in 1859. He actually wrote it about 20 years before this date but sat on the work knowing the backlash he would receive from publishing it. Darwin goes along with the Victorian Period not only because his work was published during this era but because he poses a lot of interesting question about people and our humanity. Darwin's book was also written as more than just a list of his findings. It seemed her really tried to use writing and language to help get his point across.

During this time there is a major shift in religious beliefs throughout England. The Church splits in to three divisions: Evangelical (Low Church), Broad Church, and High Church. The Evangelical Church focused on Christian morals and living the most Christian life possible. The Broad Church focuses on the inclusive nature of the Church and the High Church was essentially the Catholic Church, following tradition

During the end of the Century literacy rates began to grow. Children were required to attend school until the age of 10 meaning more people could read. The end of the century also saw the rise of "Art for Arts Sake". This was all about art being aesthetic and existing for the purpose of beauty and to be looked at. Before art was supposed to tell us something or mean something deeper. Now art can just be beautiful.

The Victorian Temper is all about how people of the Victorian period acted "prudish". They were trying to look as "pure" as possible. However, this era has a lot do with sex. The hypocrisy of the Victorian movement is that they were trying to be above sex when it was all they could think about.

The Woman Question was what to do with all the women. During the Victorian Period women greatly outnumbered men. Since women were like property and always had to be attached to a man, they started marrying women off to men overseas. Women were seen as indispensable since there was so many. A women who did not get married would most likely be working a hard job for little pay. It was almost like picking the lesser of two evils.

Many of these women were more sexually free as well. They chose to have sexual relations outside marriage. Women during this time also gained the ability to divorce their husband. It was still very hard and they had a lot of hoops to jump through to do it but it was possible for women. This new woman scared many men.

The Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti

The Goblin Market is a story that is supposed to be a children's tale. To be fair there is a moral to the story but the story presents as if there is something more going on. The story is about two sisters Laura and Lizzie. One night they hear Goblin men outside selling their fruits. Lizzie does not trust these men and does not want anything to do with them. Laura however, goes to the Goblin men and buys their fruit with a lock of her golden hair. She becomes addicted to the fruit in a very graphic sucking and eating scene. When Laura can no longer get the fruit she begins to wither and die. Lizzie saves the day when she searches out the Goblin men. She attempts to buy fruit to bring back to her sister but the Goblins wont allow it. When she refuses to eat with them they smash the fruit in to her face. Lizzie leaves and lets her sister suck the juices off her body from where the Goblins smashed the fruit. They are both okay and grow to be old with children.
