Multicultural integration can involve hearing and deaf or hard-of-hearing students. I work with deaf and hard-of-hearing students. There have been movies like "Hammer" and "Coda" that explain the diversity of how kids grow up either deaf or have parents who are deaf.

Working with students who are deaf is my passion. I have an identical twin sister, and she is deaf. Working with the deaf because of my sister's struggles in school has always been my goal. I have learned different teaching methods throughout my years of service. Having students sit in a circle while teaching gives each student access to the teacher and peers when someone is answering a question.

Fostering a classroom filled with general education students, deaf students, and special needs students is challenging. Working with high school students, I see this at least twice daily, in the American Sign Language Class (ASL). Sometimes it is difficult for the hearing students to sign and talk, but as they improve, they learn to develop that skill. Resulting in leaving no one out of a conversation.

This year, the deaf community has celebrated 55 years of service in public schools. We gathered with elementary, middle, and high school students, parents, teachers, and alumni for a family picnic. High school students have also gone on field trips to the Texas School for the Deaf for their homecoming dance and football game.

Coda is about a girl who has a family who is deaf, and the diversity of her life being the only one who can hear in her world.

In an ASL classroom, it is best to learn sign language. The use of body language and facial expressions helps to show what you are trying to say. Remember, sign language is a real language (Fransisco, 2024). The classroom that I assist in has a no-talking rule. This is the best way to learn.

When I am interpreting in the Special Education classroom the teacher gives me time to sign and expand so that my student understands what the assignment(s) are.

There is always something going on. Starbucks Deaf Chat is the place to be on Fridays. Student enjoy collaborating with their peers and learning new ASL signs.

If a student is hard of hearing or deaf the best place to be seated is in the front of the classroom. This ensures that the students will be able to see the interpreter and teacher at the same time.

Integration of Deaf Education and General Education Curriculum is one of the most important things to do. Teachers will need to know the students' reading level, as some students read at a lower level than others, requiring modifications.

When you are cheering on a friend who is deaf or hard of hearing, you should raise both your hands with fingers wide open and shake them high in the sky. This shows that you are clapping. A Deaf person cannot hear a clap, so doing this shows them your support.

I have seen how students grow and learn from their peers. All the years I have observed that Physical Education class is their favorite subject. Watching them interact with all the students is priceless. There is not much language to be said or signed, playing basketball, football, soccer, or any sport that is enjoyed by all.

I would go to the Catholic Church with my deaf peers. Father Walsh was the best priest ever. He would have summer camp, picnic gatherings in different cities, and family dinners for all the deaf and their families. He embraced deaf culture in a way that we all learned that we are all the same. The only difference is that a deaf person cannot hear.
