Chapter 1:
Starr feels disconnected to her friends because they go to a different school than her. She feels this way due to conversation topics that are based on the school. This can be felt in real life because many people have friends outside of school. People in real life can feel disconnected from their friends whenever they feel they cannot relate to what their friend is talking about.

Chapter 2:
When Khalil is shot in the book, Starr experiences a type of fear and shock of it happening, not understanding at first, but then becoming terrified. This sort of feeling can be found in many kinds of books where the main character experiences something unreal, and terrifying to them, although usually on different levels. An example of something similar, but still different is an event that occurs on page 13 and 14 in the book Uprooted by Naomi Novik, where the character experiences the shock from something happening to them, instead of someone else. This feeling of 'not me' and 'not them' can be attributed to the thought process of hearing about something, but never expecting it to happen to the one hearing about it. Because of this if it does happen to that person the feelings they experience during the situation are of 'this cannot be real'.

Chapter 3:
Starr watched her friend die and because of this experiences nightmares of this experience and of a similar experience where she watched another friend die many years before the book takes place. This connection of deaths in the form of nightmares occurs in a way rather similar in the Harry Potter books. In the Harry Potter books, the main character (Harry Potter) watches some of his friends die and he too experiences nightmares because of this. In both of these books the main character's brain connects the two incidents in the form of nightmares, mixing the experiences together.

He opens the driver’s door. ‘You okay, Starr-’ Pow! “

Reason: This part was chosen because so many people experience something similar to this where they lose loved ones due to police brutality. This passage in the book is very powerful because many people have to live in fear of the police. The author of this book sheds a light on a very important topic, bringing more awareness.

2. This is important because after most people experience something traumatizing, they have nightmares. The ending of this passage is also very powerful and deep.

April 16 Ch 3-4

1) The support for people in need is a good connection to the book and the outside world where Starr and her family were there to support Khalid’s family when Khalid died emotionally and with some money by organizing a charity event towards Khalid’s funeral. This connects to the world outside where we also support others in need whether that be a go fund me page, charity organizations, and donations towards our development towards the solution to covid 19.

2) How people change their personality, attitude, etc for school is another connection that happens in the book and what some people in high school deal with. Similar to the book, people want to be socially accepted and that sometimes means altering who they are to another person which is horrible to say the least, but still happens. In the book Starr takes it that it’s normal, but the connection is that it's never okay to be someone who you are not, which happens in the book and in real life to some students.

3) Another way that it connects is how people compare themselves and shame themselves for not having something else that someone has. In the book Starr never states how it was better to be in her community than the area in her school. She claims how it’s better than her community, etc which isn’t good because she should be proud of where she comes from and show it instead she masks it with something else. Molding her into something she wants to be instead of embracing herself, things that people in highschool do to become more “ socially acceptable “ being a connection to the book and the outside world.

He’d knock on the window, I’d let it down, and he’d say with a snaggletooth grin, “See you later, alligator.”

Back then I’d giggle behind my own snaggleteeth. Now I tear up. I imagine him standing at my window, and I smile for his sake. “After a while, crocodile.”

-Excerpt From: Angie Thomas. “The Hate U Give.” Apple Books.

This part was chosen because it looks at the relations between the main character and another. It also looks at how the main character remembers their friend; instead of shying away from the memories because of pain, the character remembers them with open arms to remember their friend as well as they can.
----------------------
Page 101, Paragraph 1, Chapter 5:
“One-Fifteen follows Khalil’s hands with the flashlight.

He orders Khalil to get out with his hands up.

He barks at me to put my hands on the dashboard.

I kneel beside my dead friend in the middle of the street with my hands raised. These lines of chapter 5 represent remembering, and associating things known with the trauma. It is often because of this that people often judge an entire group of people based on the actions of just one person. That is why this part was chosen.
--------------------------

This is confusing since they think that it’s accepted in heaven and their perspective in all is really unique and many people would disagree such as the main character Starr. Even she says that it’s stupid and dosen’t make sense. For the second quote I chose it since it’s hinting for the events that were about to happen which helps us gear up to something that might happen which may be spontaneous, scary, etc.

1. Racism plays a big role in this book overall and in this section of the book, Starr thinks her friends are making a racist joke which is understandable since they aren’t black. It also shows how people stereotype black people into drug dealers and how it may be very hard for Khalil to get justice although he was unarmed.
2. In chapter 7, you can see Starr doubt her friends and you can make a connection to your everyday life where you may feel betrayed or hurt by your friends.
3. They stereotyped Khalil as a drug dealer on the news and now everyone thinks that Khalil is a drug dealer and the police was in the right. You see this on the news all the time and you see it often where black people are assumed to be drug dealers and dangerous. You see on the news how black people get shot by the police for almost no apparent reason.

This could be connected to real life as in our times many people are exploited by the for doing something that has no intention towards being the thing that they're being used for or being used for someone else's advantage.
2. Speaking of which, her family wants to protect her from any outside harm. This could be connected to real life where many people you would do that for/would do that for you.
3. also in chapter 9, the police didn't have any intents in arresting the police officer.

1. In Chapter 11, Starr is very upset because most people are taking Khalil’s Protests as a way to get out of class. Most people are also stereotyping Khalil to be a drug dealer, making it hard for him to get justice. This is connected to the real world because black people are often stereotyped to be drug dealers and harmful.

2. In Chapter 11, Starr’s dad is faced with an unacceptable situation, where the police try to arrest him for something he did not do, using an excessive amount of power. This is connected to the real world because the police often make claims about black men that aren’t necessarily true, abusing their power.

3. In Chapter 12, One-fifteen’s father has a television interview airing, where he will be giving his son's side of the story. Making it seem as if One-fifteen is the victim. However Starr wants Khalil to get justice but is afraid of the consequences she may face. This is again connected to the real world because black people are often stereotyped to be dangerous, making it hard for them to get justice. People who speak up about their experiences are often threatened, something Starr does not want to face.

1: In these chapters, things between Starr and her friends had become awkward and such due to anger and misgivings. This often happens between friends for many reasons such as things that some did wrong, misunderstandings, disagreements, ect. In this book Starr and her friends find a wedge between them due to reasons evolved from racism, something that can also often be found even between friends.

2: When the interview is given on tv, a lot of lies and misconceptions are told on it instead of the pure truth. This makes people side with the ones on the tv and not even think about what the truth could actually be. This occurs in books 4 and 5 of the Harry Potter books when the media tries to push a certain view and back it up with things that are not the truth. Because of this, people gain an opinion that is not true or supported. This happens often also in the real world and is a huge problem, especially when it deliberately attacks MINORITY GROUPS (both physical and mental included).

3:When Starr and her friend Maya team up against their friend Haley, they do so under the same purpose; because their friend wasn’t being kind to them concerning their emotions. This is not uncommon in friendships if one friend hasn’t been paying particular attention to whether or not what they say or do to their friends hurt them. Sometimes this lack of awareness is purely an accident and the one doing it wants to fix it, but other times the one doing it feels no remorse for hurting their friends if they learn about it. This is a sad thing found in many friendships.

Quote 1;
Page 335-336
"“If Officer Cruise were sitting here,” Mrs. Carey says, “what would you say to him?”

I blink several times. My mouth waters, but I swallow. No way I’m gonna let myself cry or throw up from thinking about that man.

If he were sitting here, I don’t have enough Black Jesus in me to tell him I forgive him. Instead I’d probably punch him. Straight up.

But Ms. Ofrah says this interview is the way I fight. When you fight, you put yourself out there, not caring who you hurt or if you’ll get hurt.

So I throw one more blow, right at One-Fifteen.

“I’d ask him if he wished he shot me too.”"

I chose this because it is Starr’s big punch towards officer 1-15 and because it shows a big part of her personality. Instead of saying an insult or a wish, she says a direct question, something that the officer could actually reply to, but may not be able to. This shows her skill in choosing what is right to say and makes a strong stance in terms of her fight. She spoke the truth without insult, only with pure, tough truth and questions.

Quote 2:
Page: 351
“Chris pulls back with a gentle tug to my bottom lip. He presses his forehead against mine and looks at me. “I love you.”

The “I” has appeared. My response is easy. “I love you too.”"

I chose this quote because it shows a small part of Starr’s relationship with Chris, something besides the shooting. The point of ‘I’ that Starr talks about, shows a more personal part of her that was shown earlier in the book, and when Chris says it, things mean a whole bunch more. This happened after they actually sat down and talked, which shows what talking can do. It also shows the importance of honesty in relationships and a bit of the effects after Khali’s death.

1. One connection that I felt when I read this was the connection to Maya. Personally, I have experience people throwing racist asian comments around like “you eat dog” or “chink” and I see it all over the internet. Like Hailey said “it’s just a joke” this is the same thing they always say. People think that just because it’s a joke, it’s not a racist comment and they can say it whenever they want and you can’t get upset at it or else you are too “sensitive”.

2. Without debate, you can tell that Hailey is being racist to Starr and Maya and probably all the minority groups. Racism is a big problem in the world because many minority groups face it. You see it on the news such as people getting beat up because they are black or yellow. People also get different opportunities depending on their race.

3. Another connection I can make is Hailey’s dad trying to get her out of trouble. He is using his power as a school board to get her daughter out of trouble that she deserves. This is seen in life often where people use their power to get themselves out of something where they are obviously in the wrong.

In this picture I drew an event that occurred in chapter 18. In this chapter, something that Starr feared would happen, did. in this chapter, she and her family are attacked by people they do not see or are able to identify. They shoot in through their windows while the family was watching a game of basketball. The attackers also threw in a brick and the windows were very much broken. I drew this because it represents a point of realization, that something horrible really would come from people not liking what Starr says and that is what makes it a rather important part in these chapters.

1. Chapter 21

“Iesha blinks several times and says in a voice like broken glass, “After all I’ve done for you.”

“All you’ve done for me? What? Putting me out the house? Choosing a man over me every single chance you got? Remember when I tried to stop King from whooping your ass, Iesha? Who did you get mad at?”

“Seven,” Daddy says.

“Me! You got mad at me! Said I made him leave. That’s what you call ‘doing’ for me? That woman right there”—he stretches his arm toward Momma—“did everything you were supposed to and then some. How dare you stand there and take credit for it. All I ever did was love you.” His voice cracks. “That’s it. And you couldn’t even give that back to me.”

2. Chapter 23

“Starr, think about this,” Chris says. “That won’t solve anything.”

“And neither did talking!” I snap. “I did everything right, and it didn’t make a fucking difference. I’ve gotten death threats, cops harassed my family, somebody shot into my house, all kinds of shit. And for what? Justice Khalil won’t get? They don’t give a fuck about us, so fine. I no longer give a fuck.”

Reasons for Picking

These two paragraphs are emotional and truthful. They are dialogues of the characters expressing how they feel. In the first paragraph, Seven expresses how he feels towards his biological mother, Iesha. You can tell his words are heart felts and he is emotionally broken. For the second one, it shows how Starr is mad and she’s done everything right but there is no difference made and all she wants is justice.

1. In Chapter 26, Hailey later apologizes to Starr for “her being upset with Hailey” and says that she wants things to go back to the way they once were. However, Hailey does not apologize for her actions or racial slurs that she had thrown at both Maya and Starr. Hailey does not simply realize that what she did was very wrong and upsetting. This connects to the real world because in many cases people don’t really realize that their actions were very wrong.
2. In Chapter 26, Starr mentions that there was once “a hazel-eyed boy with dimples”, who she called Khalil and the world called a thug. This connects to the real world because black men are often stereotyped to be drug dealers or thugs.
3. At the end of Chapter 26, Starr talks about how there are so many innocent black people who have lost their lives. She also mentions how people need to stick up for one another and not forget those who were killed. This connects to the real world because many black people have lost their lives due to the police abusing their power.

“When my eyes aren’t closed I see what my neighborhood has become. More tanks, more cops in riot gear, more smoke. Businesses ransacked. Streetlights are out, and fires keep everything from being in complete darkness. People run out of the Walmart and carry armfuls of items, looking like ants rushing from an anthill. The untouched businesses have boarded-up windows and graffiti that says “black owned.”

I chose this paragraph because although these rioters are trying to make a difference, the once (somewhat) peaceful neighbourhood became chaotic. I feel like Starr has at this point realized how much of a mess this whole thing has become.

“Others are fighting too, even in the Garden, where sometimes it feels like there’s not a lot worth fighting for. People are realizing and shouting and marching and demanding. They’re not forgetting. I think that’s the most important part.
Khalil, I’ll never forget.
I’ll never give up.
I’ll never be quiet.
I promise.”

I chose this because it was a great way to end the book. It has this sort of complete feel to the entire book and also acts as an indirect call for action against this type of discrimination.
