I started doing Student Spotlights this semester. In the updates, I ask for students to email me with some news about themselves. Then I create an update where they are the star! It lets me get to know them (which has been the hardest thing for this F2F teacher to get used to) and I offer a little extra credit for the extra effort. This semester, I found out I had 2 state basketballers and a classical dance champion. -Jonelle Warnock

This year my updates follow a schedule. I find the consistency helps students stay aware and engaged in the classroom. Monday's Update - Welcome to the week. I made a Loom video going over what needs to be accomplished during the week and things to look out for in the lessons and assignments. Wednesday's Update - A recap of any questions that have been brought up during office hours or emailed to me. I assume if one student has the question the whole class has the same question so I make sure everyone knows the answer. Friday's Update - Wrapping up the week. I make a Loom video going over everything that should have been completed during the week. I include a checklist so a student can run through the list to see if they have completed everything for that week. Sometimes I also include a fun poll just to engage the students. ~Beth Oberleitner

I have recorded and incorporated a ton of screencasts this year into my Flex course using Loom! I add these screencasts to both my Teacher Tips pages as well as email communications and updates. These screencasts are a cool way for my students to get to know me as well as learn about course content and being successful in our Flex course. I have tried to focus my screencast themes around common student questions or obstacles they encounter in our course. Here area some of the themes: Navigating the Gradebook, Assessing Etutoring, Using the "What If" Calculator, and Basic Buzz Navigation. These screencasts have been a terrific resource for my students as the feedback has been awesome. -Jeff Lake

The need for students to click on "show more" and read an entire update is reallly important to me. I put a lot of info in those updates - always ends up as more than will fit "above the fold". To encourage reading below "the fold" I bury extra credit about once every 3-4 weeks during a normal semester. The EC is not really hidden other than it is generally the last writing in the update. It worked last semester, but this semester seems to have a much less curious and engaged group... Time will tell!

I have started to send individual student/parent emails with a few days left in the unit of students who are behind on the unit. I have found it to be very helpful. There may only be a couple days left in the unit and a student might not have submitted anything yet, but that personal email to them and the parent helps in some cases stimulate submissions being turned in before they become missing. Then when they do become missing it is like the snooze button going off for the second alarm.

I have been sending detailed progress reports with every progress report. I have found that I get more work turned in and more communication from parents when they know what to have their students working on. I think that parents don't know how to use Schoology as much as we assume. That detailed progress report allows them easy access and a checklist for kids. ~Angelie Bauer
