B. My Walk today 2/27

My walking for the day started at about 10:20am when I was leaving my apartment headed to campus.

What are the implicit rules/norms of this space? How do people navigate and understand them?

Well the actual rules involve the space being clean and quiet. Myself and everyone else on my floor are pretty relaxed people who dont make too much noise within our apartments or in the hallway.

How does the history of this space contribute to its current atmosphere and purpose?

The history of the school contributes to the atmosphere and purpose because it is an esteemed university with a range of students and faculty on campus. The atmosphere can be described as secure and enjoyable. Public safety plays a role in the secureness because of how swift and hard they work to make sure things are in order at all times. On very rare occasion is there a safety incident on campus.

In what ways does this space promote or prohibit/discourage certain kinds of social interactions?

It discourages misconduct that will lead to someone feeling harmed, emotionally and/or physically. SJU has many groups and access to counseling, public safety, and other safe space that encourage the campus to be free of negative acts. There are flyers and posts all over campus advocating for the safety of everyone.

Beyond physical access, consider emotional or psychological access. Who feels welcome here? Who might feel excluded?

Students especially feel welcome, but I also think neighbors and other people who aren't connected to the school would feel welcome because it's a safe space with a lot to explore. Younger children (age 10-14) may feel excluded just because they're not used to such a big space with so many people or they can't relate to anyone due to their age.

How are power dynamics expressed in this space? Who seems to hold authority? How is that authority demonstrated?

Power dynamics are expressed based on authority. The president of the university holds the most power, then it trickles down to the professors, and then the students.

What are the economic factors that determine access to this space? Are there hidden costs/invisible barriers?

Having access to this space is based on tuition payments for students and a work permit or some form of accreditation to be able to teach on campus. Hidden costs may include food, parking permits, etc.

C. History of SJU

How does your personal experience, identity and background influence your access and interpretation of this space?

In general with the city of Jamaica queens as well as sju campus, as a student im able to have full access to campus, as a black woman in campus this campus has welcomed me and allowed me to be myself. Queens is a very diverse city with beautiful culture from a variety of countries that the people in it are from. As a first generation immigrant daughter, its easier for me to assimilate into the culture because it feels normal to be to see people that look like me, but also see people that don't look like me. Overall, I enjoy the melting pot if it all.

What biases might you have about this space and the people who are seen or not seen here?

The biases I had about the SJU campus was that a lot of people were well off than I thought. Ive seen luxury cars on campus and people with designer items and thought to myself, alot of rich kids go here.

How can you use different research methods (such as, observation, interviews, online/library research etc.) to uncover histories and information about this space?

Different research methods can uncover history and more information about the university very well. I think St John's is a well documented university so having research done, interviews, podcasts from students, YouTube videos are all forms of media that can provide more information on the community of SJU.

How does the local businesses or local communities influence the information that is distributed about this space?

Local businesses and communities can influence the information being spread out about this space because they're getting first hand experience and interaction with the people who are apart of the st johns campus and community. Take for example the many restaurants around campus, many of the students and faculty have become fond of places like Vincenzo's, Double J's, Cj's Cafe, etc and because an influx of people go to these restaurants, those restaurants have a general idea of how these students behave, their economic status, social background, even stress levels. This in turn allows them to make assumptions about everyone on campus, good or bad.
