Whilst therapies such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy focus on the thought processes of individuals, this can often diminish the external factors than can cause someone to be anxious about performing. A classical music pedagogy encourages note-perfect performances. This causes increased instances of perfectionist thoughts in students and this has been shown to be directly correlated with increased performance anxiety.

While some musician experience more sever MPA that affect the performance quality, anxiety is not an individual problem.
Although this may be true, young people suffer most commonly with MPA and so services should be in place to help them develop coping strategies.

Sufferers with MPA often feel uncomfortable talking about their experiences and find it difficult to ask for help. Some may say it is the responsibility of the students to reach out for support. Although this may be somewhat true, institutions have a responsibility to educate their students on MPA and provide them with adequate services to treat MPA.

While many people suffer with MPA, it could be argued that MPA is an individual problem. Individual differences mean no two people experience performance anxiety in the same way or because of the same causes. Therefore, there can be no one solution in order for every performer to cope with MPA

Although many performing musicians experience some extent of MPA throughout their lives, it has been argued that it is only an individual problem. However, MPA can be a cause of not only music-related anxieties but across a broad range associated with that individuals life.
