 What is discrimination? “Discrimination is the act of making unjustified distinctions between human beings based on the groups, classes, or other categories to which they are perceived to belong”. Transgender inequality is unequal protection for transgender people in society, transgender people have to endure transphobic harassment. Transphobia is caused by lack of understanding of understanding of transgender people, but there are also people who just hate transgender people. Transgender people experience inequality in a number of settings such as healthcare, school, law enforcement, outside, home, and at work. At school 78% of transgender students receive harasment 35% physically assaulted and 12% sexual violence leading to 15% dropping out. In the workplace 90% of trans people are discriminated against and 26% have lost jobs because of gender identity.

I am 21 years old and live in California, I identify myself as an agender. In May of 2016 I experienced discrimination trying to find a house. When I was looking for a house and found one I was interested in I would let the landlord know that I am agender before signing anything so that I could live in a discrimination free environment, however after I said to that the landlord would stop responding to me. This has happened multiple times with each landlord dropping all contact with me once they knew I am trans. After I couldn’t find a house to live in I was scared of becoming homeless my sister bought me a tent fortunately five days later I managed to find a place to live for queer and disabled people. However my mental health had gotten bad and I developed depression from all the negative responses from the landlords and my PTSD had gotten worse.

It is what people are taught from a young age and it is shown all around us, however this can cause harm and close mindedness to other gender identities and expressions. The close mindedness results in discrimination of transgender people, causing them to have to go through hate and rejection from society. Transgender people have to face discrimination in their own households, school, law enforcement, employment and healthcare. Less than 43% of transgender youth can talk to an adult they trust if they are feeling down, and parents rejecting their kid for being trans causes a higher risk of the children running away. At school transgender students are three times more likely to be left out because of their “difference” and many trans students drop out because of this. In work 26% of transgender people lose their job for being transgender because of bias. Because of all this many trans people have developed mental illnesses. Trans people who have lost their jobs from being discriminated against and children running away leads to higher homelessness rates. The homeless people have a higher chance of committing crimes and turning to drugs and alcohol and some are even sexually exploited. Many trans people are scared to reach out because of being denied by society.

Problems and Solutions/Attempts towards changes: sj50184 https://padlet.com/sj50184/aoso4yowzcf6jjsy/wish/1198097475 Right now there are many organizations that help for trans equality such as Funders For LGBT Issues a non profit organization that raises money to help solve problems that the transgender and LGBTQ community face. Another organization Transgender Law Center in California helps change laws and systems and enforce laws for safety and acceptance for the transgender community and they have been very successful. For example in 2003 they helped to modify San Fransisco’s "Regulations to Prohibit Gender Identity Discrimination" for more inclusiveness for trans people who don’t identify as purely male or female or either. The Transgender Law Center spreads awareness and makes change by holding workshops they discuss laws and educate people about the transgender community to attorneys, community members, social service workers, and business owners as well. Since 2002 they have held over 250 workshops. All of these organizations speak out against discrimination and strive for change. Another setting that can be problematic for transgender people is school. Schools can be unsafe spaces for trans students, however with organizations and people speaking out there are more changes being made to help trangender students, one such organization is Gender Inclusive Schools, this organization is helping to turn school into an open welcoming environment. Gender Inclusive Schools have professional development training on LGBTQ inclusive practices and support for trans students.They also have consultation for school staff and administrators for a safer healthier school. With this schools are becoming safer and healthier. There are also schools creating gender neutral bathrooms so that transgender students don’t feel anxious everytime they go to the bathroom. There are more non discrimination laws for transgender people being made to keep them safe as well. All of this is happening because of people striving for equality.
