Consequences
At the time, there was about 1.75 Million Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire. And because of the Genocide, 1.5 Million people had passed away. This has lead to the downfall of the Ottoman Empire. There were very few Armenians living Turkey and after that the Society in the Ottoman Empire started to decline. The Armenian people were then seen as a threat to the Turkish Government as well as their population. Society was not rebuilt and the Armenians couldn't bare to return to the place of despair and tragedy. The Armenian population dramatically decreased and the few survivors had to flee the country or be put into Exile.

Nadim 9aa

At the time of the massacre, there were approximately 2 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. In the early 1920's, when the massacre ended, 1.5 million of Turkey's Armenians were killed.

Why did it happen
Armenian Genocide happened because of the religion problem. Ottoman Empire is a muslim country, but some Armenian people started to be Christian on 19th century. This caused some conflict between Muslim people and Armenian people. On 1877, Ottoman Empire had a war against Russia. After this war, Russia put some part of Armenia under their control and tried to separate them from Turkish people. These situations made Armenian people want to get independence and some people started to do resistance against the Ottoman Empire. This lead to the Genocide against the Armenians.

Why&How
The Armenian Genocide began in 1915 and ended in 1918. Several leaders of the Turkish Government had planned to exterminate all Armenians living in Turkey. The Armenians began to ask for equal rights under the Ottoman Empire, and because of that, they were severely massacred and tortured. They were discriminated and the Turks despised them. Turkey was and still is a Muslim country but many Armenian People decided to accept Christianity. This caused conflict. The major decline in power of the Ottoman Empire because of World War 1 caused the Armenians to be used as scapegoats to get out of a bad situation.

Nadim 9aa

Why it happened:
The massacre began as an attempt to create a new Turkish state. The Ottoman Empire began to disappear and slowly tear apart, because nations in the Balkans wanted to claim independence. As a result, the Ottoman Empire changed from being multi-religious to almost entirely Muslim. There were only a few states left, that kept the Ottoman Empire multi-cultural. The Armenians were among those countries that were not Muslim. The Empire attempted to restore greatness by becoming fully Islamic. However, to do so they had to overcome an obstacle, which were the Armenians. They did this by forcing conversion. However, when this did not occur fast enough, massacres and persecutions began.

Dina and Maya 9A

However over time Armenia was absorbed into the mighty Ottoman Empire, during the 15th Century.

The Armenian genocide began on the 24th of April 1915. On this horrific day the Turkish government arrested and executed several hundred Armenian intellectuals. Most of them were stripped naked Andy were forced to walk in the blistering heat. If they would stop walking they would immediately be shot dead.

During the event of the death march young Turks created a "Special Organization," which actually organised 'Killing Squads.'

The Armenian genocide was committed against the Armenian people of the Ottoman Empire during the time period of WW1 (1915-1918). This was planned by the Turkish government because they did not want the Armenians to be a part of the Ottoman Empire, only Turkish population was preferred. The decision of the genocide was made by the political party in power of the Ottoman Empire, they were known as the Young Turks. They relied on members of the committee of union and progress to carry out the genocide, and they also relied on the "special organization " to carry out the mass slaughter of deported Armenians. Armenians were subjected to deportation, expropriation, abduction, torture, massacre and starvation. Large amount of the population was sent away to Syria into the desert to starve and die. Women and children were abducted and abused terribly.
-Nehal 9A

What was the Armenian genocide?

The Armenian genocide is a period in time where the leader of the ottoman empire decided that he did not want Armenians living in the empire’s borders, hence massacring them. it was said that around 2 million Armenians lived within the borders of the ottoman empire, but by the 1920’s when most of the massacres took place, it was said that around 1.5 million Armenians were massacred, deported or removed from the borders by force.

why did the Armenian genocide take place?

Armenia resided in an area next to Turkey and was its own empire, they were the first country to name christianity as their major religion, but because of the rise of the Ottoman empire they were conquered by them. The Ottoman empire was mainly muslim and was bias towards muslims, Muslims had more legal rights, they had equality, and paid less taxes. The Ottomans viewed the Christians as Infidels and did not agree with their religious beliefs and wanted to remove the faith from their empire. Though the Ottomans took away many of their rights, the Armenian society thrived under Ottoman rule, usually being the most educated and wealthy out of all of the ottoman population even with the restrictions imposed by the empire, resulting in resentment from their neighbor country, Turkey. Turkey was suspicious that the Armenian people would much rather be ruled by a christian government, thus causing suspicion that they may betray them. During the last legs of the ottoman empire, the Armenians protested for equal rights and better treatment, but the ruler of the empire said to a news outlet that he would settle the ‘Armenian Question’ and said “I will give them a box on the ear which will make them…relinquish their revolutionary ambitions.”

How did the Ottomans conduct the Genocide?

During the first stages of the Genocide, all Armenian people were sanctioned and Armenian cities and villages were sacked by soldiers, troops and ordinary people as well as killing the citizens. This left hundreds of thousands dead. In the beginning of the genocide the Turkish arrested hundreds of intellectuals and executed them, and they took the Armenian people out of their homes and forced them to go on death marches, usually stripped naked without food or water, marching through the Mesopotamian desert until they died because of dehydration or starvation, anyone who stopped to rest would be shot. Another method of their killing would be the ‘Death Squads’ which drowned people in rivers, threw them off cliffs, crucified them and burned them alive, leaving all the countrysides littered with corpses. The Ottomans also kidnapped children, converted them to Islam and sold them to Turkish families, women were stolen, raped then served as slaves for the rest of their lives and they ransacked houses of the deported Armenians were seized by the Turkish and given to Turkish families. At the end of the Genocide there were 388,000 Armenians left in the Ottoman empire borders from the original 2 million.

What were the consequences of the Genocide?

Many people were killed causing a skew in the population (around 1.5 million people were killed)

It lead to the collapse of the ottoman empire because it destabilized the area

Very few Armenians were left in Turkey causing the Ottoman Empire to decline even further

Armenians have not rebuilt their population in turkey, in comparison before the Genocide there were around 2 million Armenians in turkey, though compared to now there are about 50 thousand Armenians in Turkey

The government which started the genocide was prosecuted, resulting in a government change in Turkey.

People in Turkey still discriminate against Armenians and still view them as outsiders.

There are unstable borders between the Armenian and Turkish borders.

Many Armenians were forced to go into exile or flee Turkey as political refugees

The Armenian Genoicde, also known as the Armenian massacre refers to two distinct but related events. First the campaigns conduct against the Armenian subjects of the Ottoman Empire by Sultan Abd-ul-Hamid II in 1894-96 and second to the deportation of Armenians by the Young Turk government in 1915-16.
Why did it take place?
The most widely stated reason behind the massacre is said to be the intent to remove the Armenian people from the country of Turkey, 8' order to create a fully Islamic, Turkish-dominated country. While the Muslim Ottoman dynasty had allows various religions factions to exist in the Ottoman Mepire since its foundation, the ruling body had become less tolerant and was seen as sliding into decline and corruption through the 19th and 20th centuries.

http://encyclopedia.kids.net.au/page/ar/Armenian_Genocide
