Critical thinking is the goal for all of our students. Gifted students need to be encouraged to think deeply about their studies and to challenge themselves to examine the ideas they study. Richard Cash says, "[Critical thinking] is about developing autonomous thinkers who can identify, evaluate, and reason through information in a broader context outside themselves." (Advancing Differentiation: Thinking and Learning for the 21st Century by Richard M. Cash, Ed.D., p. 160) Thinking beyond just the presented facts and information is a skill that must be taught and there are many strategies we can use to help our students think more critically.
