They based all beliefs on the theology of Calvinism---created by John Calvin. They wanted their new home to follow the idea of "a city upon a hill" where God would be found in scripture and strong work ethic. But, along with the belief of God also came the belief of Satan recruiting people around the world to help spread evil.
