"The Rhyme of the ancient mariner" is a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge as a ballad that is an old form of poetry. The language is simple and clear. It's Coleridge's greatest poem.
It is the first poem of the collection of "LYRICAL BALLADS" .It is made up of 7 parts.
"The Rhyme of the ancient mariner" tells us of a sailor's voyage, the story is realistic but also mysterious and symbolic.
It begins with the arrival of a mariner to a wedding where he persuades a wedding guest to listen to his story. So the mariner describes his voyage: an albatross drives the ship through storms, but the mariner kills the albatross motiveless. As a consequence damnation falls on the ship and everyone dies except the old mariner . This killing is like a crime against creation, against the positive life-force.
At the "Death" and "Life in Death" come to play dice. Death wins the lives of the crew members and LIFE IN DEAD the life of the mariner: he has to wander the earth and tell eternally his story.

“The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" is a mysterious story about an old sailor, who, because he slays an albatross, suffers terrible allucinations, seeing a spectral vessel and he is brought back home by a crew of ghosts.
The ballad “The Rhyme of the ancient mariner” is included in "The Lyrical Ballads" of William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This publication in the year 1798 is considered the initial date of English Romanticism.

The originality of these poems concerns both the matter (the humble and the poor people become the protagonists) and the language that is more simple than before and more alike the old popular poetry than to the eighteenth century verses.

After having read this poem, we decided to deepen the romantic topic, making drawings , posters, and texts about it. We also watched a DVD and we saw it with our teacher. The poem played by Orson Welles and illustrated by Gustave Doré was fantastic. Finally we studied the characteristics of Romanticism in Great Britain, but that wasn't difficult, because we had already experienced the romantic characteristics in Coleridge's poem. We had fun when we did it.

The characteristics of Romanticism are the following ones: the illuministic confidence in the power of reason was supplanted by belief in the power of imagination and of feeling. The romantic subjects are: description of everyday life, emphasis on political freedom, interest for remote places and ages (especially middle age), the beauty of nature and the belief in mysterious forces. Romanticism is essentially poetic. The romantic poets refashioned the language of poetry. They created new associations of words, unusual images and they found models in the old popular poetry.
Wordsworth and Coleridge belonged to the first romantic generation "the Lake Poets", so-called because they lived in the Lake District.
