This book is about a young girl, Ada and her younger brother, Jamie, who are living in London with their cruel, abusive mother at the beginning of the Second World War. Ada's poor family circumstances are compounded by being born with a clubfoot, a birth defect that could have been treated and corrected as a baby, but due to her mother's ignorance and cruelty, has never been treated and has left Ada crippled and housebound. Due to Ada's courage and ingenuity, the children's circumstances change when they are evacuated out of London to the country and allocated to live temporarily with a single woman, Susan, who is dealing with issues of her own. The war unfolds and a lot happens, both at a country level and at a personal level for all the characters, but especially for Ada (who readers get to know very well through her emotions expressed in first person narrative style). I liked that this book kept me wanting to read it and it made me curious about certain aspects of WWII history (such as spies trying to enter Britain's shores). It moves along at a good pace and has a great plot and a good cast of characters. I was really curious to know how the story might end as I did not think it would be predictable (which it wasn't!). There is a sequel titled "The war I finally won".
