Onset MW/Daydreaming

What do you think about a situation that starts as MW and then moves into Daydreaming? Let's say I caught myself MW, I realise that that's the case, but then I continue with the narrative of the MW thought and I control it deliberately (day dreaming). Where would be the onset we should focus on? On the transition from MW to Daydreaming, when I realised I was MW or when the unguided thought started? -Adri

Re: Meta-Awareness

Following up on Adriana's comment about meta-awareness, I think that whether intentionality requires meta-awareness depends on which type of meta-awareness we're talking about. I'd argue that non-propositional meta-awareness (or meta-cognitive feelings) are necessary for intentional mental action. See Proust for a similar view: https://www.amazon.ca/Philosophy-Metacognition-Mental-Agency-Self-Awareness/dp/0198748175. The idea behind this argument is that meta-cognitive feelings are required to normatively regulate your mental life, and that's required for mental action.

But I'm not convinced that explicit meta-cognitive awareness (e.g. forming the reflective thought, "my mind is wandering") is either necessary or sufficient for mental action. I think it's not necessary since certain skilled mental actions lack explicit meta-cognition. I think it's not sufficient because intentional mind-wandering is not a mental action, but can occur with explicit meta-cognitive awareness.

But all this is a really great topic! Nice work! -Zac
